The current Indian market is packed with some great 250cc bikes. The oldest in the current lot is the Yamaha FZ25. It has an air-cooled engine with an oil-cooler, making 20.9PS and 20.1Nm. It gets beefy suspension components - a conventional telescopic fork at the front and a preload-adjustable monoshock at the rear. It’s most direct competition is the Suzuki Gixxer 250, which is powered by a purely-oil cooled engine that puts out 26.5PS and 22.2Nm in its BS6 guise. For the extra performance, the Gixxer does demand an almost Rs 30,000 premium over the FZ25. Of course, for those who want a full faired bike, Suzuki also makes the Gixxer SF 250.
For those seeking more performance in the 250cc space, you have the KTM 250 Duke and its Swedish sibling, the Husqvarna Svartpilen 250. Both bikes are based around the same engine - a 249cc 4-valve, liquid-cooled mill pushing out 30 PS and 24Nm, and they even share pretty much all of their underpinnings. But where the Duke is a sharp streetfighter, the Svartpilen is a minimalistic scrambler. Husqvarna also offers another variant of this 250cc in the form of the Vitpilen, which is designed to mimic a cafe racer. Recently though, Bajaj has also launched a new Dominar based on the same KTM engine platform - the Dominar 250. While the engine has been detuned compared to the KTM and Husqvarna, the Dominar 250 retains the design and features of the larger 400.
