Hybrid cars have been around for the better part of two decades but the technology never seemed to be much more than a novelty for most car manufacturers, outside of the luxury space. While there have been a few models introduced through the years, they’ve always been too expensive to justify the added cost, largely due to the lack of localization.
Now, as most car conversation pivots towards electric, Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are using the opportunity to get hybrids into the mainstream, with the Hyryder and Grand Vitara. Both SUVs get a naturally-aspirated petrol engine with a mild-hybrid as standard but they also come with an optional strong hybrid powertrain that is expected to deliver the highest fuel efficiency rating in the segment and by a significant margin at that. In this video, we take a short look at India’s journey with hybrids and explore the pros and cons of this technology.
