The Tiguan is an extremely important model for Volkswagen in India, as it not only marks the German car maker’s return to the premium space, but is also the brand’s first SUV launch in India in over half a decade. Positioned as a premium compact SUV, the Tiguan promises the quality, comfort, convenience and performance of entry-level luxury SUVs while being more affordable.
Its 2.0-litre four diesel engine is extremely refined in keeping with the premium image of the brand, and offers 143PS of power in a highly linear manner. The build quality, plastics quality and parts quality is all top notch, while the feature list betters that of almost all its rivals like the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. There’s good amount of legroom, kneeroom and headroom for second row occupants and the rear seat back can even be reclined.
The Tiguan gets premium features like an electric tail gate with courtesy function, heated front seats, three-zone air-conditioning to name a few. Premium leather seats and ambient lighting add to the premium feel inside. A 500km long drive from the bustling city of Bangalore to the scenic coffee estates of Chikmagalur helped us assess the Tiguan’s credentials.
