About Suzuki
Suzuki Bikes Latest Updates:
Suzuki has recently showcased the GSX-8R and V-Storm 800 DE at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Expo which the Japanese manufacturer launch very soon in India. Suzuki also showcased the Flex Fuel Gixxer SF at the event. One of the latest launches from the manufacturer includes the V-Strom SX and Avenis 125. Suzuki also updated its Gixxer, Gixxer SF, Gixxer 250 and Gixxer SF 250 with smartphone connectivity. While the best-selling two-wheeler from Suzuki is Access 125, the manufacturer also sells the spacious Burgman Street scooter.
History:
Before venturing into the world of automobiles, the Japanese brand started out as a loom weaving company. Eventually, after the end of the second World War, Suzuki began building motorcycles, with its first product being the ‘Power Free’ in 1952, which used a 36cc 2-stroke engine mounted onto a bicycle frame. Six years later, Suzuki introduced the famous ‘S’ logo that we know today and in 1954, the company changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co Ltd.
In 1982, Suzuki inked a deal with TVS to develop two-wheelers specific to the Indian market. The alliance got us some interesting products like the Suzuki Supra, Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Shogun and the Suzuki Shaolin.
However, the bikemakers parted ways in 2001, and Suzuki was under a 30-month moratorium, during which it could not enter the Indian market with any products competing TVS’ models. In 2006, the Japanese marque made a comeback as Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt ltd. It then set up its manufacturing plant in Gurugram, Haryana, with an annual capacity of 7,50,000 units per annum.
Suzuki’s fame, and particularly that of the Hayabusa, grew leaps and bounds after the 2004 Hindi movie ‘Dhoom’. In fact, 2016 onwards the company began assembling the bike in India rather than importing it from Japan, making it surprisingly affordable. Moreover, the 2021 Suzuki Hayabusa has been consistently raking in good sales figures for the company since its debut in May 2021.
Product Portfolio:
Scooters: Suzuki caters to a wider range of audience with its lineup of 125cc scooters. From the Access 125 which caters to mature riders, to the Burgman Street that pleases riders seeking comfort and convenience, to the Avenis that is focused towards the young audience. Suzuki has also introduced smartphone connectivity and navigation on all the three models.
Nakeds: The Suzuki Gixxer and the Gixxer 250 are the two bikes from the Japanese brand. The Gixxer 155 made its debut in 2014 and has been popular ever since. In 2019, Suzuki introduced the new Gixxer 250 which used a brand-new oil-cooled engine and had the same versatility of the baby Gixxer. In 2019, Suzuki updated the Gixxer 155 with design inspired by the 250cc sibling, but the bike remains mechanically unchanged.
Faired Bikes: The Suzuki Gixxer SF and the Gixxer SF 250 are the faired siblings to the Gixxer and the Gixxer SF respectively. While these bikes flaunt full fairing, they do not have a committed riding position like one would expect from a supersport. Their sporty, yet friendly ergonomics make these bikes easier to live with
ADV: The Suzuki V-Strom 650XT is the only adventure bike in the Japanese bikemaker’s India portfolio. This mid-displacement adventure bike comes with traction control and switchable ABS which is not offered by its competitor here. The V-Strom’s 19/17-inch wire-spoke rims get tubeless tyres and the 20-litre fuel tank, along with Suzuki’s vast service network, makes this bike a reliable tourer.
Hyperbike: The legendary Suzuki Hayabusa in its third generation continues to remain a crowd favourite. While the latest Busa isn’t the same 200PS+ machine everyone expected it to be, it is now loaded with electronics, features heavily redesigned bodywork and yet continues to be available in India at a relatively affordable price.
Cruiser: The Suzuki Intruder is the sole cruiser in India from this brand. It uses the same 155cc engine from the Gixxer and is modelled after the Suzuki M1800R Intruder. While the Gixxer’s single-cylinder engine suits the cruiser format, the bike hasn’t been a crowd-puller for Suzuki.
Greatest Hits:
Suzuki Hayabusa: The ‘Dhoom’ Bike
Suzuki Access 125: The ‘practical’ scooter with a sporty heart
Suzuki Gixxer: The bike that made the ‘Gixxer’ tag accessible to the masses
Future Prospects:
Suzuki is all set to enter the electric two-wheeler market in India with the Burgman Street Electric. The e-scooter has been spotted testing in India, and we expect it to launch in the first half of 2022. We can also expect the Suzuki Intruder 250 to be launched in 2022, with its engine shared with the Gixxer 250.
