The Sierra, first launched in 1991, has not earned its legendary status for nothing. The new concept recalls it back.

Tata Motors has breathed new life into the Sierra nameplate by unveiling the Sierra ICE concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. This modern interpretation pays homage to the original Sierra while embracing cutting-edge design and technology to appeal to today’s SUV buyers. The new Tata Sierra is no longer a three-door model but now features a practical five-door configuration, making it suitable for a broader audience.

The Tale Of Iconic Tata Sierra Since Its Birth

The Tata Sierra holds an iconic place in Indian automotive history. Tata launched it in 1991 as the country’s first off-road SUV for private transport. It shared its mechanicals, front fascia, and dashboard with the Tata Telcoline pickup but stood out with its unique three-door design, large rear glass panels, and rugged charm. These features made it a trendsetter in India’s emerging SUV market.

Its robust diesel engine, spacious cabin, and off-road capabilities quickly attracted adventure enthusiasts and private buyers. The Sierra became a symbol of aspiration and modernity in the early ’90s, earning a loyal following. However, the lack of a five-door version and increasing competition forced Tata to discontinue it in the early 2000s. Despite this, the Sierra remains a cherished nameplate among Indian auto enthusiasts.

How Does The New Tata Sierra Concept Look?

Tata Motors has masterfully retained some iconic design cues from the original Sierra while blending them with modern styling elements.

The front is dominated by a massive rectangular grille with a prominent Tata logo at the center. This grille seamlessly merges with sleek LED headlights, giving the SUV a contemporary yet bold appearance. A full-width LED DRL strip above the grille adds to its futuristic charm, a design element now common across Tata’s new-age lineup. Gloss black elements on the bumper and a chunky silver skid plate enhance its rugged look.

From the side, the Sierra ICE concept maintains an upright stance reminiscent of the original model. Flush door handles lend a minimalist appeal, while large, gloss-black cladding around the wheel arches adds muscle to the design. The sporty multi-spoke alloy wheels complete the dynamic look. Tata has also attempted to recreate the iconic rectangular rear window of the original Sierra, now split due to the five-door layout.

At the rear, the Sierra concept is kept simple. Sleek, full-width LED tail lamps enhance its modern aesthetics, while a silver skid plate on the bumper adds a robust touch. Unlike the original model, the new Sierra does not feature a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, reflecting its shift toward a more refined design language.

Interior and Features of the New Tata Sierra

The cabin of the Sierra ICE concept is modern and minimalistic, with a focus on comfort and technology. The dashboard features a first-for-Tata floating three-screen setup that spans its entire width, offering a seamless digital experience. Contrasting yellow accents brighten up the cabin, while sleek AC vents add to its modern appeal. The four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo has been carried forward, blending familiarity with innovation.

The rear of the Sierra concept features a bench seat with three adjustable headrests, ensuring comfort for all passengers. While the final production-spec model is yet to be revealed, one can expect amenities like rear AC vents, charging ports, and rear sunblinds for added convenience.

Tata has hinted at several advanced features for the production model, including a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, and powered front seats with ventilation. Multi-colour ambient lighting and the three-screen infotainment setup are expected to take center stage in the cabin’s tech-forward layout.

In terms of safety, the Sierra ICE is expected to come equipped with up to seven airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, parking sensors, and Level-2 ADAS.

Tata Sierra ICE Powertrain Options

While official powertrain details are yet to be announced, the Sierra ICE is expected to feature Tata’s 1.5-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine, delivering 170 PS. This would differentiate it from models like the Curvv, which uses a smaller 1.2-litre unit. Additionally, Tata Motors may offer diesel and electric powertrain options, making the Sierra a versatile choice for various customer needs.

The Tata Sierra’s price is estimated to start around Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom). This places it in competition with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Maruti Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, and MG Astor.
