Dual-cylinder CNG technology in the cars is gaining popularity as it not only offers a more economical powertrain option but also provides additional boot space, addressing a common drawback of traditional CNG setups. The Hyundai Exter is the latest entrant to adopt this technology, thanks to recent updates given by the Korean carmaker. It falls in the same price bracket as the Maruti Suzuki Fronx CNG, which does not offer a dual-cylinder CNG setup and also has some notable differences from the Exter CNG.
If you are eyeing either of these models, take a look at the key differences between the two SUVs.
Below are the variants of the Hyundai Exter and Maruti Fronx with factory-fitted CNG kit options, along with their prices.
Hyundai Exter CNG Price (ex-showroom) |
Maruti Suzuki Fronx CNG Price (ex-showroom) |
Exter S CNG- Rs 8.43 lakh |
Fronx Sigma CNG- Rs 8.46 lakh |
Exter SX CNG- Rs 9.16 lakh |
Fronx Delta CNG- Rs 9.32 lakh |
Exter SX Knight CNG- Rs 9.31 lakh |
When comparing the prices of both models, the entry-level Sigma variant of the Fronx is priced marginally higher, with a Rs 3,000 premium over the Exter S CNG. However, in terms of their top-spec variants, the Exter CNG proves to be a more affordable option, offering savings of Rs 16,000 compared to the top-spec Fronx CNG. Additionally, the SX Knight with the CNG option is priced lower than the top-spec Fronx CNG.

Both the SUVs offer essential features, but the Exter surpasses the Fronx in terms of its equipment list. It boasts a larger touchscreen infotainment unit, along with additional niceties like a sunroof, rear AC vents, a fast type-C USB charger in the front row, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. In contrast, the Fronx offers larger alloy wheels, wireless connectivity for Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and tilt adjustment for the steering wheel, which the Exter does not.
But the Exter does offer a semi-leatherette upholstery, compared to the Fronx’s fabric seats.

As seen in the table above, it's evident that both models are equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine. However, the Fronx CNG not only produces higher power and torque outputs compared to the Exter CNG, but it also delivers better claimed fuel efficiency. Both the models are offered with the 5-speed manual transmission option only.
In conclusion, your choice will primarily depend on the body style you prefer. The Exter competes in the micro-SUV segment, while the Fronx targets the sub-4m SUV space. Considering the price premium you have to shell out for the Fronx, you not only get a larger and a slightly more powerful vehicle but also one with a marginally better mileage.
However, if you prioritise better features, the Exter emerges as the clear winner. It not only offers essential equipment found in the Fronx but also adds good-to-have features such as a sunroof, rear AC vents, tyre-pressure monitoring system, and additional safety with six airbags.
