Hyundai Exter CNG vs Tata Punch CNG: Which Dual-cylinder CNG Micro SUV Should You Pick?

Hyundai recently updated the Exter with dual-cylinder technology, which replaced the single large cylinder offered earlier, improving its practicality quotient. With this update, the Exter micro-SUV and Tata Punch are neck and neck in terms of the technology used. However, it would be interesting to see which micro-SUV would make a more practical buy if you are in the market looking for an affordable CNG-equipped vehicle. 

To begin with the comparison, here are the prices of the Hyundai Exter CNG and Tata Punch CNG: 

As seen in the table above, the Punch CNG is offered in multiple variants, giving the buyer more options to choose from. The lower-end variants of the Punch will also help you save up to Rs 1.17 lakh over the entry-level S variant of the Exter. But the Punch’s top-end Accomplished Dazzle is Rs 48,000 more expensive than the Exter CNG’s Knight Edition SX. 

Dimensions

On paper, the Tata Punch is slightly longer and wider than the Exter. However, the Hyundai is taller and its wheelbase is longer by a smidge. Features 

Both Punch CNG and Exter CNG come with a well-equipped cabin for the price they are offered at. Even though, you miss out on features that are offered with their top-end variants, you will still be satisfied with the equipment they pack: 

Both the cars come with all the required creature comforts to keep you satisfied. But the Exter CNG is the better equipped vehicle here, with some added niceties and comforts, including more airbags, automatic climate control, and rear AC vents. That said, the Punch fights it back by offering automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers. 

Powertrain  

Both Exter CNG and Punch CNG come equipped with a 1.2-litre engine, which is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Even though the Exter comes with a four-cylinder, it is the Punch which generates more power and torque.

Verdict 

Both the Tata Punch CNG and Hyundai Exter CNG come with all features you would need for your daily use and have decent specifications on paper with the Punch edging out slightly ahead. But if you’re someone who wants your vehicle to be loaded to the brim with features, then you should consider the Exter, which comes packing a bit more niceties like an automatic climate control and six airbags.
