Apart from the introduction of the CNG powertrain, Tata could take this opportunity to introduce a couple of new features on the micro SUV

  • Tata Punch CNG spotted testing for the first time.
  • It will get the carmaker's twin-cylinder tech, opening up its boot space.
  • Expected to get Altroz’ 73.5PS 1.2-litre engine teamed with a 5-speed manual.
  • Tata could introduce new features such as a sunroof, wireless phone charging, and an air purifier.
  • Launch expected soon and could command a premium of Rs 1 lakh.

Tata Motors has begun testing the CNG variant of the Punch SUV, with its badge hidden away, ahead of its debut which is expected real soon. The Tata Punch CNG made its debut at Auto Expo 2023 and like the Altroz, will get a couple of new features. It will also be Tata’s answer to the Hyundai Exter CNG, which will debut on July 10.

The Tata Punch CNG will get the carmaker’s innovative twin-cylinder technology that debuted in the Altroz. It uses two small tanks instead of a huge one, opening up plenty of boot space. This gives it an instant advantage over the Exter CNG as you have a more usable trunk. It should get the Altroz’ 73.5PS 1.2-litre engine, teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission.

It also doesn’t lose on the convenience factor as the Punch CNG had its spare wheel mounted underneath the car, like the Altroz. Apart from that, Tata will also offer a tyre repair kit, useful if you encounter a minor puncture.

Tata could also use this as a base to introduce new features in the Punch CNG. Like the Altroz, we suspect the Punch will get a sunroof, wireless phone charger and an air purifier to make it a more rounded rival against its main threat, the upcoming Hyundai Exter. Also, Tata showcased the Punch CNG with these features at the Auto Expo 2023

The Tata Punch CNG is expected to debut soon and will likely command a premium of around a lakh over the petrol model that is priced from Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). It is expected to be offered in multiple trim choices including a top-end variant, giving buyers that added bit of choice.
