Being eco-friendly can sometimes come at a cost, lesser cost that is if you’re in certain states

The recent shock we all got at the price reveal of the Ultraviolette F77 could soon become a common occurrence, with the deadline for the FAME II subsidies to be revoked creeping closer. But before that happens, here’s us giving you a lowdown on the State-wise list of prices of the three most popular scooters, which will give you a clearer picture on the pan-India status of subsidies on electric two-wheelers.

Right off the bat, we can see that while many states have already withdrawn the subsidy given to EVs, Uttar Pradesh has proposed a subsidy but not yet applied it. Next, while states like Maharashtra and Gujarat have a fixed subsidy amount, in Delhi and Rajasthan it varies depending on the particular scooter’s battery capacity.

An interesting outlier here is Maharashtra where, from what we learnt from the respective dealers, the flat Rs 10,000 state subsidy amount applies to the Ather 450X and Ola S1 Pro, but not the TVS iQube S.

Now, as mentioned, save for UP (if the proposed subsidy goes through) the prices of these scooters will only go up as the time passes. But even at the moment, these e-scooters cost as much or even more than many entry-level performance-oriented petrol motorcycles, despite not offering comparative performance chops.

And come March ‘24, when FAME II concludes, we could see a massive hike – about Rs 45,000 to Rs 50,000, depending on the scooter – which could put them out of reach for everyone except the rich. This might impact the penetration of electric two-wheelers in the Indian market, which has so far been on the uptick, though whether that will be the case remains to be seen.
