Volvo has beaten Mercedes in the race to assemble luxury EVs in India
  • Foreign-built cars are taxed heavily which inflates their prices.

  • Government offers production-linked incentives and lower tax slabs for locally assembled and manufactured cars.

  • Volvo’s electric SUV will be the facelifted model, expected to be priced around Rs 60 lakh.

  • Will be available in a single, fully loaded trim level.

  • The carmaker will introduce a new EV in India every year from 2022 onwards.

Volvo has announced that it’s first all-electric offering in India, the XC40 Recharge, will be locally assembled at its Hosakote plant in Karnataka. After long delays caused by the semiconductor shortage and other supply chain issues, the electric vehicle (EV) will finally go on sale in July. It’s expected to be priced from around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom), and will compete with the Kia EV6 and upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Volvo XC40 Recharge we’ll get in India is the facelifted EV which was revealed in March this year. It’ll likely come in a single top-spec variant with a 78kWh battery pack good for a WLTP-tested range of over 418km on a single charge. With dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD), the 408PS XC40 Recharge is much more powerful than its ICE sibling, the XC40. It can scoot to 100kmph in just 4.8 seconds – as quick as some sports sedans!

It’s capable of charging at speeds up to 150kW, at which an 80 percent charge comes in just 40 minutes. Alternatively, it can be charged at home with an 11kW AC wallbox, which takes 8-10 hours to fully charge the EV.
