With no tax benefits being offered to EVs in the sub-4-metre segment, Mahindra has decided it best to make the eXUV300 bigger than its ICE ‘twin’
  • The electric SUV will be 4.2 metres in length.

  • Claimed range should be around the 450km mark.

  • More details on Mahindra’s EV roadmap including Born EVs to surface in August.

  • To place itself as a direct alternative to the Tata Nexon EV.

We haven’t heard much about the all-electric iteration of the Mahindra XUV300 ever since it first broke cover in near production form at the Auto Expo 2020, and a launch timeline of Q1 2023 was revealed in February 2022 post a delay. Now, through a recent quarterly update press conference, the carmaker has revealed that the eXUV300 will go beyond the sub-4-metre dimensions of its ICE counterpart (3995mm long).

The reason for that is down to no tax benefits being offered to EVs in the sub-4-metre segment, so the carmaker has more flexibility with the eXUV300. Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director of Auto and Farm at M&M also revealed that the EV will measure at 4.2 metres long, which puts it over 200mm longer than its ICE twin making it bigger than its arch rival the Tata Nexon EV and within the realm of MG ZS EV (4.32m).

Dimensions aside, the near-production eXUV300 would differentiate itself from the ICE XUV300 through aspects such as a redesigned front fascia, new LED headlights and tail lamps, EV-specific alloy wheels, and blue highlights galore. That said, the overall silhouette should remain similar to the ICE model. The cabin should also get different dials and a larger touchscreen infotainment system onboard.

The main difference will be under the hood (and in the floor pan) of course. While technical specifications are yet to surface, we could expect a claimed range of around 450km, since we’ve now got the Tata Nexon EV Max as a benchmark. Also, expect more technical differences with the ICE model considering the differences in dimensions.

Since the Mahindra eXUV300 will go beyond the sub-4-metre realm, we can expect the electric SUV to be retailed at a slightly higher price point when compared with its ICE counterpart. But before that, Mahindra will disclose its vast roadmap of future EVs in August.
