EVs launched in 2024

The presence and adaptation of electric vehicles has been increasing in India over the last few years, and the first half of 2024 continued the trend with many new EVs being launched. Most of the EVs launched were luxury models, and we only have two mass market vehicles on the list.In this report, let’s take a look at the top electric vehicles launched in 2024 till now: 

Tata Punch EV

Price: Rs 10.99 lakh to Rs 15.48 lakh (ex-showroom)

The Tata Punch EV was launched earlier this year at a starting price of Rs 10.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It is underpinned by Tata’s Acti.ev pure electric vehicle platform, making it the first Tata EV to use the platform. The punch EV is available with two battery pack options and is offered in five broad trims. To set it apart from the standard Punch, it comes with styling revisions and a few EV-specific design cues as well.

In terms of features, it gets a a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, wireless phone charger, rain sensing wipers, cruise control, air purifier, ventilated front seats, a sunroof, and keyless entry with push-button start/stop.

Its safety kit includes ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, 6 airbags, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, and a 360-degree camera with parking sensors.

The Punch EV is offered with two powertrain options: a 25 kWh battery pack paired with an 82 PS and 114 Nm e-motor and a 35 kWh battery pack teamed with an electric motor producing 122 PS and 190 Nm. You get an ARAI-claimed range of 315 km with the smaller battery pack, while the larger battery pack offers a claimed range of up to 421 km. 

The Punch EV rivals the Citroen eC3, Tata Tiago EV and Tata Tigor EV

Mahindra XUV400 EV

Price: Rs 15.49 lakh to Rs 19.39 Lakh (ex-showroom)

In January 2024, Mahindra updated the XUV400 EV, which is the Indian carmaker’s only electric vehicle on sale. With this update, the XUV400 EV got a revised interior which made the cabin look more modern and premium . Mahindra also launched new PRO variants - EC PRO and EL PRO and introduced new features with the XUV400 EV. It is offered with two battery pack options and 7 colour options to choose from.

Post update, the XUV400’s features list includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (OTA update pending), a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, dual-zone climate control, a 6-speaker sound system, a wireless phone charger, a sunroof, 55+ connected car tech features, and keyless entry with push-button start.

The safety kit includes six airbags, a rear defogger, a tyre pressure monitor, rain sensing wipers, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and rear parking sensors. 

The XUV400 EV is offered with a 34.5 kWh or a 39.5 kWh battery pack that are paired with an electric motor that produces 150 PS and 310 Nm. The smaller battery offers a claimed range of 375 km, while the latter offers a claimed range of 456 km. 

It is a rival to the Tata Nexon EV. 

BYD Seal 

Price: Rs 41 lakh to Rs 53 lakh (ex-showroom)

BYD launched the Seal sedan in the first half of 2024, making it BYD’s third all-electric offering in India. The electric sedan is available in three broad variants that come with multiple battery pack options and the option of choosing between a single and dual motors. The three variants are called: Dynamic Range, Premium Range and Performance.

The first thing you will notice when you step inside the Seal is its large 15.6-inch touchscreen screen that can be rotated at the touch of a single button. The remaining features list is vast and consists of wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a panoramic glass roof, a heads-up display, and heated and ventilated front seats, a DynaAudio sound system, and electronically heated ORVMs.

In terms of safety, it gets ADAS features, 9 airbags, front and rear parking sensors with 360 degree camera, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a traction control system. 

The Seal is available in three different powertrains – the Dynamic Range that comes with a 61.4 kWh battery pack and a single rear-drive electric motor that makes 204 PS and 310 Nm, and offers a claimed range of 510 km. Second in order, we have the Premium Range, which offers a 82.5 kWh battery pack and a 313 PS and 360 Nm single rear-drive electric motor which together provide a claimed range of 650km. The Performance is offered with the same 82.5 kWh battery pack, however, it is paired with dual electric motors that are capable of generating 560 PS and 670 Nm.The performance variant is stated to offer a claimed range of 580 km. 

It competes against the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and the Volvo XC40 Recharge. 

Porsche Taycan Facelift 

Price: Rs 1.89 crore to Rs 2.53 crore ( ex-showroom)

The Porsche Taycan received a facelift recently, with prices starting from Rs 1.89 crore (ex-showroom). Porsche has not revealed the full lineup yet, and for now, only the Taycan 4S and Turbo variants are available on Porsche’s India website. The facelift brings minor tweaks for the exterior as well as the interior and bigger battery packs with higher charging capabilities.

The features list on the Taycan includes a 10.9-inch infotainment system, a 16.8-inch digital driver’s display, head-up display, 14-way powered front seats with memory functions, 4-zone climate control, and ventilated seats. In terms of safety, it gets 8 airbags as standard and a full suite of ADAS features. 

The Taycan gets two powertrain options to choose from: an 89 kWh battery pack and a 105 kWh battery pack. The Taycan 4S produces up to 544 PS and 696 Nm, while offering a claimed range of up to 557km. The Taycan Turbo makes up to 884 PS and 890 Nm, while offering a claimed range of up to 630km. Both 4S and Turbo variants come in an all-wheel drive setup. 

It rivals the Audi e-tron GT and the Mercedes-Benz EQS

Porsche Macan EV

Price: 1.65 crore (ex-showroom)

The Porsche Macan got electrified this year, and with the launch of the Macan EV, Porsche discontinued the ICE-powered Macan SUV. It is the first all-electric SUV by Porsche and its only performance-oriented Turbo variant is priced at Rs 1.65 crore (ex-showroom).

In terms of features, the Macan EV gets a 12.6-inch digital driver’s display, a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and if two large screens were not enough, you get another 10.9-inch display for the front passenger, which is optional. Other features onboard include automatic climate control, keyless entry, a heads-up display, cruise control, and ambient lighting. Taking care of your safety are a full suite of ADAS features and multiple airbags.

The Macan EV gets a single powertrain option, which is a 100kWh battery pack paired with dual electric motors that together produce 639 PS and 1130 Nm. It offers a range of 591km and the EV can do a 0-100 sprint in just 3.3 seconds. 

It rivals the Audi Q8 e-tron and the Mercedes-Benz EQE. 

BMW i5 

Price: Rs 1.2 crore (ex-showroom)

BMW launched the i5 M60 xDrive at Rs 1.2 crore (ex-showroom) as a completely built unit (CBU). Its availability in India is limited, and with the i5, BMW debuted the newest version of the 5 Series, which was followed by the launch of the ICE-powered 5 Series LWB.. The i5 is this fifth electric offering by BMW on our shores.

The BMW i5 comes with a large 14.9-inch curved infotainment system that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, powered tailgate, ventilated and powered seats, and automatic climate control. 

In terms of safety, it gets ADAS features, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, a 360-degree camera, and electronic stability control

The i5 is powered by dual electric motors that produce 601 PS and 795 Nm. It gets a 81.2 kWh battery pack, which is paired with the dual motors. The i5 does a 0-100 kmph sprint in a rather impressive 3.8 seconds.

The i5 rivals the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT. 

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Price: Rs 7.5 crore (ex-showroom)

Rolls-Royce launched its first electric ultra-luxury vehicle, the Spectre at a whopping Rs 7.5 crore (ex-showroom). For the Indian market, it is positioned between the Cullinan and the Phantom, and is the most expensive EV in this list.

The luxury-on-wheels EV from Britain comes with multiple screens, massage function and ventilation for the seats, a multi-zone climate control, connected car technology, a great amount of sound insulation, and one-tap door open function.

The Spectre’s powertrain gets a 102 kWh battery pack teamed with a 593 PS and 900 Nm electric motor, that helps in sending the 3-tonne Rolls from naught to 100kmph in a matter of just 4.5 seconds. It offers a WLTP-claimed range of 530 km.

The Spectre has no direct rivals as such, but is an electric alternative to the Bentley Continental. 

These were the top electric vehicles that were launched in 2024 till now and while most of them might be luxury models, there are many more exciting EVs that are coming out in the second half of 2024.
