At a recent media event, Bajaj Auto announced that the Chetak electric scooter will now be almost completely localised with only the battery cells being imported. Furthermore, the bike maker has also established a new factory line in Akurdi, Pune for the Chetak and the upcoming electric scooters under the sub-brand.
The newly constructed facility is capable of producing 800 units per day and around 2.5 lakh units per year. Interestingly, a commemorative blue colour scheme was showcased on the Chetak EV at the event. Sadly, it will not be making its way to production, for now.
Apart from that, the Chetak e-scooter is completely unchanged and is powered by the same 3.08kW BLDC hub motor, producing 4.08kW (Peak) and 16Nm of torque. The electric motor comes paired to a 3kWh battery pack claiming a range of 90km.
Ideally, with the localisation, the prices of Bajaj Chetak EV should be relatively reduced but it will still continue to be priced at Rs 1,47,775 (ex-showroom including Fame II and state subsidies). This price tag makes it one of the most expensive premium electric scooters on sale in India, despite not being the most feature-rich or packing the most performance.
In related news, Bajaj will be launching one electric vehicle every year for the next 3-5 years. Click here to know more. Apart from that, Bajaj might also be working on an e-scooter that will rival the Ather 450X. Click here for all the details.
