German carmaker BMW is ready to launch the iX1 electric SUV on our shores on September 28. The iX1 will be BMW India’s most affordable EV. It will be the fourth electric bimmer in the Indian market after the i4, iX SUV, and i7 flagship luxury sedan. And if you had your eyes on one, here are the 5 things you need to know about BMW’s next EV launch.
The iX1 shares its platform with its ICE counterpart, the X1, and mirrors most of its design styling with it. However, the electric SUV sets itself apart with notable changes, which include a tweaked front grille and subtle blue accents on the front and rear bumpers, as well as along the side sills.
Inside, the iX1 gets an upmarket dashboard featuring dual screens that run on BMW’s i-Drive 8 operating system. No physical controls for the climate control means the cabin projects a nice minimalist look. And as for the driver, he gets to hold onto a chunky three-spoke steering wheel. We also suspect BMW will offer the India-spec iX1 with different cabin hues to suit your taste.

Key features of the iX1 will include a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto/Apple Carplay, a Harman Kardon sound system, wireless phone charging, panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats with memory and massage functions, dual zone climate control, and ambient lighting.
Safety features include ABS with Brake Assist, multiple airbags for the driver and passengers, electronic stability control, and advanced driver assistance systems. The car will also likely feature a tyre pressure monitoring system and ISOFIX mounting for child seats.
Globally, the iX1 packs a 64.8 kWh battery pack and is offered with two broad powertrain options: the eDrive20 and the xDrive30. The former boasts a front-wheel-drive single electric motor setup which delivers 204PS and 250Nm, while the latter features dual electric motors that power all wheels and deliver 313PS and 494Nm. BMW India is yet to confirm which variant will be introduced in our market.
BMW says the iX1 can do up to 475km, as per the WLTP cycle, depending on the powertrain you pick. It also supports fast charging capabilities.
The BMW iX1 will be the carmaker's second electric SUV in India after the iX and will likely be priced around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), making it an affordable choice for BMW enthusiasts looking to add an EV to their collection. The electric SUV will be a direct rival to Volvo XC40 Recharge, while being an alternative to the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
