Ola Electric has announced a refund amounting to Rs 130 crores to its S1 e-scooter customers. Ola had been charging customers separately for the off-board chargers, which has caused an investigation against the EV maker by the Ministry of Heavy Industries for overpricing.
According to the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, EV makers are not to sell the chargers of e-scooters separately. Following this, ARAI, reportedly, was planning to pursue a case on Ola Electric but has dropped it since the EV maker has announced the refund.
The charger separately costs between Rs Rs 9,000 to Rs 19,000, and a lot of EV makers sell them separately to make their e-scooters more affordable and eligible for the FAME subsidies. That said, FAME had previously cut off offering subsidies to EV brands partaking in such activities.
Lastly, what does this mean for new Ola customers? Well, apart from the oncoming refunds for eligible customers, there will be no difference in the prices per se. The S1 Pro and S1 will still cost Rs 1,24,999 and Rs 99,999, ex-showroom Delhi including Fame II and state subsidies.
