Ather Energy has launched the 450X Gen 3 electric scooter in India with interesting upgrades including higher range, larger battery and more functional updates over the previous model. The company has also updated the 450 Plus.
The updated Ather 450X is priced at Rs 1,57,507 and the 450 Plus at 1,35,996 (ex-showroom India including state subsidy). In comparison the outgoing 450X is priced at Rs 1,52,401 and the 450 Plus at Rs 1,33,391 (All prices ex-showroom India with Fame II subsidy).
Being in the premium electric scooter segment, the Ather e-scooters go up against the likes of Ola S1 Pro, Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube Electric and Okinawa Okhi90.
The Gen 3 Ather 450X and 450 Plus get a larger 3.7kWh Lithium-ion battery pack, as opposed to the older 2.9kWh unit. The updated 450X claims a ‘True Range’ of 85km in the ‘Ride Mode’ and 105km in the ‘Eco Mode’, a significant bump from the earlier 70km (Ride mode) and 85km (Eco mode) range figures. The Indian Driving Cycle (IDC) claimed range has also increased to 146km, from 116km.
The 450 Plus, on the other hand, gets an updated true range of 70km (10km more) on the Ride mode and 85km (15km more) in the Eco mode. The IDC claimed range has increased by 8km and clocks at 108km on the Gen 3 450 Plus.
The 2022 models get 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM which Ather claims will offer a faster UI than before in toggling across apps and more. The previous model had gotten 1GB RAM and 8GB of ROM.
With the bigger battery capacity, the 0-80 per cent charge time has increased to 4 hours 30 mins (3 hours 35 minutes on the older model). However, the 0-100 per cent charge time is clocked at 5 hours 40 minutes, five minutes less than the previous model.
The electric scooters now roll on new 12-inch MRF tyres, with a comparatively fatter 100/80-section rear tyre. The front rubber remains the same size at 90/90. The more rounded profile in the rear tyre, Ather claims, will improve the ride and handling. If you want to know whether these work in the real world or not, check out our first ride review.
The e-scooters come with new and redesigned rear-view mirrors that offer better visibility at the periphery. Adding to that, the EVs also get 18- and 16-litre optional accessory bags that can be mounted at the rear and the apron. The e-scooters now weigh 111.6kg, 3.6kg more than earlier. This would be the courtesy of the bigger battery pack and subtly increased body dimensions.
Apart from the aforementioned updates, the Ather 450X and Ather 450 Plus remain unchanged and flaunt the same hardware and features. The e-scooters are powered by a 6kW, 26Nm Permanent Magnet Synchronous (PMS) motor.
They get the same telescopic fork and monoshock suspension setup as before and for stopping power the e-scooters rely on a 200mm disc up front and a 190mm disc in the rear with a combined braking system.
With the Gen 3, we expected Ather to bring more power to its electric scooters, which would help them take the fight to their primary rivals. That said, the updates and the improved range are well appreciated and make the e-scooters more wholesome electric products than before.
