China-based automaker BYD is eager to expand its electric portfolio in India. Following the launch of the E6 electric MPV for private buyers, the carmaker will now bring a more premium product, the Atto 3 SUV, to our shores. The Atto 3 EV is set to be unveiled tomorrow and here’s all you need to know about it:

The BYD Atto 3’s immediate SUV rivals are the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona. At 4.45 metres long, the BYD SUV is longer and wider than both its rivals and has a longer wheelbase too, which should give it a more commodious cabin. However, similar to the MG and Hyundai SUVs, the Atto 3 is still a five-seater.
BYD’s latest e-Platform 3.0 ground up EV platform underpins the Atto 3. The SUV is powered by cutting-edge, lightweight Blade battery packs that are offered in 50kWh and 60kWh sizes overseas. Depending on the battery size, the Atto 3 offers 345km to 420km of range (WLTP), but it remains to be seen which battery option will be offered in India.
The Atto 3 gets a single front-wheel drivetrain option, irrespective of the battery size. It’s powered by a 204PS and 310Nm e-motor that propels it from nought to 100kmph in an impressive 7.3 seconds.
It’ll be capable of DC fast-charging at up to 70kW for the standard battery pack and up to 80kW for the extended range model.

The Atto 3 has a clean and minimalist exterior design with sharp-looking headlights at the front and a covered silver grille. It has typical SUV-like proportions with an upright windshield and large windows. At the rear, it features a full-width LED light that runs below a chrome trim piece and connects the two split LED taillights. With its aero wheels and strategically placed air vents, the electric SUV looks sporty and plush.
On the inside, the Atto 3 is radically designed with light-coloured materials and textures and oddities such as the layered dashboard and slot-machine-like air vents. It’s feature-packed with equipment such as a panoramic sunroof, electrically opening tailgate, powered front seats and a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen paired with a Dirac HD sound system.
Apart from safety equipment such as six airbags, stability control (ESP) and a 360-degree camera, the Atto 3 will also be equipped with ADAS features such as front and rear collision avoidance, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Keep in mind that these features are offered in the model sold overseas and the list could be slightly different for the India-spec Atto 3.

The Atto 3 will be launched India in the form of completely knocked-down kits (CKDs) that will be locally assembled. We expect its prices to start at around Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom) for now. Later in 2023, the carmaker could consider local manufacturing that would make the SUV more affordable.
