Among various Indian EV brands showcasing their products at the Auto Expo 2023 was Cake, a Swedish company. Its Makkaa Flex :Work and OSA Plus :Work B2B e-scooters and Kalk :Work B2C e-motorcycle were displayed at the Expo, and we could see these in our market soon.
We spoke to Cake officials and learnt that the company is looking to set up a manufacturing plant in Uttar Pradesh. With this, Cake’s products could become slightly more “affordable”. In fact, Cake mentioned that the B2B products could be priced around Rs 2.5 lakh, while the Kalk could demand as much as Rs 3.5 lakh.
For perspective, the US-spec Osa Plus :Work packs a mid-mounted motor with a peak output of 10kW and a claimed range of 110km from its 70Ah battery pack, which can be fully charged in four hours. The Makka Flex :Work flaunts a 3.3kW hub motor that can propel the 82kg e-scooter to a claimed top speed of 45kmph. Its 62Ah battery pack can be charged in six hours and has a claimed 100km range.

The Cake Kalk :Work is what we are most excited about. This 83kg e-motorcycle has a 11kW mid-mounted motor which propels it to a top speed of over 90kmph. Its 50Ah battery can be fully charged in three hours; however, the claimed 86km range is a bit disappointing. That said, its massive 926mm seat height and SUV-shaming ground clearance of 300mm could make it a bit daunting for shorter riders.
Even though the design of the Cake products are minimalistic, they pack premium hardware. From suspension co-developed with Ohlins and Formula-sourced brakes to variable regenerative braking and TFT displays, the Cake EVs pack it all.
We believe that Cake could not just localise, but also alter the specs as per our market needs. That said, even if the company sets up shop in India, its products won’t reach the masses before 2025.
