UPDATE: Mercedes-Benz has launched the EQA electric SUV in India at Rs 66 lakh (ex-showroom).
Until now, Mercedes-Benz’s electric portfolio majorly consisted of premium models such as the EQS sedan and EQE SUV, both north of Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom). The EQB, priced at Rs 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom) is the only option under the crore mark. However, soon there is going to be another affordable electric model, the EQA electric SUV, set to launch on July 8.
The EQA electric SUV will be the entry point for Merc’s electric portfolio in the Indian market. It’s based on the GLA (its equivalent ICE version), but gets a host of EV-specific changes for its unique appeal.
Up front, the EQA being an EV, gets a closed grille with plenty of small tri-pointed stars, flanking a pair of LED headlights. Like any other Merc EV, the DRLs are connected up front and the aggressively styled bumper gives it a sporty look.
In profile, save for the aero-specific alloys, the overall silhouette looks similar to the GLA, its ICE sibling. But shifting focus to the rear, the EQA once again has its unique identity, courtesy of the connected LED tail lamp setup.
Inside, the EQA’s cabin is a familiar place to spend time in as the dashboard layout is similar to the GLA. However, this being an EV, the dual displays consisting of the touchscreen infotainment system and digital driver’s display have EV-specific graphics.
Other great attention to detail touches include the turbine-like AC vents that change colour depending on the temperature and the small tri-pointed star trim in the co-driver’s side with backlit ambient lighting.
In terms of features, range topping models in the international market get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control, a Burmester surround sound system, powered front seats, a panoramic sunroof and 64-colour ambient lighting. Passenger safety is taken care of by multiple airbags, electronic stability control, front and rear parking sensors and ADAS.
Mercedes-Benz India is yet to disclose the final powertrain spec for the EQA. But in the UK market, the baby Merc EV is available with three options – one single and two dual-motors – with varying battery packs. To make life easier, we have compiled the specifications in a table below:
