Hyundai might have been one of the first carmakers in India to introduce a long range EV, the Kona Electric, but it was a lukewarm reception. However, the carmaker is aiming to spice things up with its second electric vehicle for India, the futuristic looking Ioniq 5. Pre-launch bookings for the luxury hatchback are underway for a token amount of Rs 1 lakh and prices are expected at Auto Expo 2023.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an electric vehicle built from scratch. It’s based on a dedicated EV platform called the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) that also underpins the Kia EV6. Being built on an EV-only platform has its own set of quirks, which we have mentioned in detail here.
The Ioniq 5 debuts Hyundai’s Parametric Pixel design language in the country. In fact, the hatch has many pixel resembling design touches like the small square-shaped insignias forming the headlamps and tail lamps. And despite being a hatchback, it has upright styling with a nice boxy silhouette. Lastly, large 20-inch alloy wheels round off the overall design. And, there are three colours to choose from -- red, grey, and white -- all with a black roof.
Inside, the electric hatchback’s twin displays, comprising the digital driver’s display and infotainment system, take centre stage. Unique touches can be found, like the four dots on the steering wheel instead of the Hyundai logo. Also, there is a magnetic pad on the right side of the driver’s display to paste your notes.
The cabin scores highly on the practicality front as well. For starters, this being an EV platform has an entirely flat floor, and as a result, the central console can be slid forth or back. It also gets sliding and reclining rear seats, while the front occupants get calf support for enhanced comfort. There’s more eco points for the bits of the cabin and upholstery made from recycled and or environmentally sourced materials.
In terms of features, the luxury hatchback gets augmented reality heads-up display, connected car tech, dual-zone climate control, a large panoramic glass roof, powered front seats, ambient lighting, and a wireless phone charger. Your safety is taken care of by multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and a whole suite of ADAS features.

At its price point, it will lock horns with the Kia EV6, BMW i4, and the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
