UPDATE: Mercedes-Benz has launched the EQA electric SUV in India at Rs 66 lakh (ex-showroom).

Mercedes-Benz India had earlier shared its future plans to bring in a plethora of electric vehicles to the Indian market this year. Following its commitment towards electrification, the carmaker is all set to introduce its entry-level EV SUV to India tomorrow. The Mercedes Benz EQA, which is the electrified version of the GLA SUV sold in India, will be the most affordable EV offering from the German auto manufacturer, further strengthening its EV portfolio in the country. In this article, let's take a closer look at it.

Mercedes Benz EQA: Overview

In our earlier exclusive story, we had deciphered the variants and powertrain which will be offered in the India-spec EQA. Mercedes Benz is going to launch the EQA in its EQA 250+ guise, ditching the EQA 300 4MATIC and EQA 350 4MATIC variants which are sold in the overseas markets.

The overall silhouette of the EQA is identical to its ICE counterpart, the GLA. What sets it apart are the EV specific design styling like an enclosed grille adorning several three-pointed star elements, a connected LED DRL with signature LED headlights and redesigned bumpers with air vents to cool the battery pack underneath.

The side profile  sports re-designed EV specific alloy wheels. At the back, for a distinctive look, it gets connected tail lights as seen on the EQB, which is already on sale in India

The Mercedes Benz EQA 250+’s cabin resembles the GLA’s layout but with few EV specific design additions like illuminated stars on the dashboard and copper finished illuminated AC vents and trims, as seen in the EQB as well.

The EQA will be a feature rich EV with niceties like dual 10-inch infotainment screen (with wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and digital driver’s display setup with EV-specific graphics. It is also equipped with a dual-zone automatic climate control unit, heads-up display, keyless entry, 64-colour ambient lighting, a premium Burmester surround sound system, gesture controls, voice commands and a panoramic sunroof.

On the safety front, it will be equipped with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, traction control, hill-hold, hill-descent and hill-start assist, a 360 degree surround view camera with front and rear parking sensors, parking assist and additional ADAS features like blind spot detection, emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

The EQA 250+ variant gets a 70.5 kWh battery pack powering a single motor mated to the front wheels producing an output of 190 PS and 385 Nm. It Boasts a claimed WLTP range of 560 km and gets a limited top-speed of 160 kmph. With this powertrain option, the EQA can sprint from a standstill to 100 kmph in 8.6 seconds. 

It supports both AC (7.4 kW and 11 kW) and DC charging. With DC charging up to 100 kW, it can juice up the EQA from 10 to 80 percent in under 35 minutes.

We expect Mercedes Benz to launch the EQA 250+ at an introductory price of around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom), which will make it a competitive contender to the Volvo XC40 Recharge, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and the BMW iX1.
