The Bharat Mobility Global Expo has kicked off and Mercedes-Benz India has showcased its star attraction. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the EQG, or in more layman terms, the electric G-Wagon. This concept was showcased at the 2021 Munich Motor Show and the production-spec model is expected to make its global debut later this year. And to answer the Mercedes fans, yes, it’s coming to India.
Even though the silhouette design is unmistakably ‘G,’ there are plenty of EV-specific design changes here. The most obvious one is the blanked-off grille that’s illuminated and stands out for its unique aesthetic.
In profile, keen eyed viewers will notice that there is a sleek LED light running across the profile of the car. Then there’s the alloys, which seem to have been lifted off the Maybach S-Class. Another touch is the dual-tone silver and black paint scheme and the sleek roof rack with a LED light bar.
The most obvious change at the rear-end is the deletion of the tailgate-mounted spare wheel. In place of it is a box to hold your knick knacks and charging cables.

Step inside the Mercedes-Benz EQG concept and you’ll notice that the dashboard design is very much identical to the standard G-Class SUV. That said, the cabin is finished in a light beige tone, which looks upmarket, sure, but very easy to get soiled. Apart from that, the dual integrated screens have EV-specific graphics like other electric Mercedes cars.
In-depth technical specifications of the Mercedes-Benz EQG concept are yet to be revealed. That said, Mercedes said it comes with four motors driving each wheel. There is a two-speed gearbox to help you tackle tough off-road obstacles, basically like a low range transmission in an ICE off-roader. Speaking of off-roading, the EQG will be based on a body-on-frame chassis that’s more suited to tackling tough terrain.
But the real party trick for the Mercedes- Benz EQG is that it can spin around and around, or twirl, in the same spot. More than us telling you about it, watch this video below of how it manages to do so.
Yes, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the production-spec EQG will be offered here once the model goes on sale internationally. One can expect the wraps to be taken off later this year globally, so you can expect it to reach here sometime in 2025. When launched, it will rival the upcoming Jeep Wrangler EV, which is also under development.
