The government has clarified its position on new EV launches in India
Ola S1 Pro and PureEV Fire Incidents

A rumour regarding the government asking EV makers to suspend all new EV launches has been circulating the Internet. More interestingly, this has been covered by a few news agencies as news.

The Union Government’s press agency, Press Information Bureau’s fact-checking arm has issued a clarification on social media discrediting the ‘news’ and confirming that no such step is being implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

The recent fire incidents involving scooters from multiple EV brands, including Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech, PureEV and Jitendra EV  could be the major reason why such a piece of (rumoured) news would have popped up in the first place. Sub-par electric vehicles, which are made in China might not be ideal for Indian driving conditions, and these EVs making their way to the customers is scary and could prove to be dangerous to the lives of users.

The popularity of electric vehicles has taken a massive hit and safety concerns regarding the same have risen over the summer, indirectly affecting the premium EVs from well-established brands like Ather, TVS, Revolt and Bajaj.

Following the suit of Okinawa Autotech, Ola Electric and PureEV have also recalled a number of their electric vehicles to diagnose and fix issues that might lead to fire incidents.

Moreover, the Central government has also called for an investigation into the matter, wherein the Road Transport Ministry has asked the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to investigate the root cause of these mishaps.
