Tata Motors took the wraps off the Avinya electric concept, a crossover that acts like a lounge on wheels. More importantly, it previews the carmaker's Generation 3 dedicated electric platform. While this crossover concept will most likely not hit production, it does give a teaser as to what to expect from a Tata EV under this platform. Here’s everything in detail:
One advantage the Gen 3 platform has over Gen 2 is that unlike the latter, which will accommodate ICE powertrains, the former will be a dedicated EV platform. That allows for more flexibility in packaging. For instance, the Avinya concept measures 4.3 metres in length, but Tata hinted they are aiming to go bigger. So expect a variety of body styles for models under this platform.
In current Tata models, the carmaker’s logo has largely been a badge that doesn’t add much to the design other than giving its models a common identity. The Avinya hints at the Tata logo making more of a presence in a Gen 3 model, as the LED DRL that spans the entire front fascia is shaped like the company logo. The same applies to the connected taillight bar. A small, yet cool touch to give the concept the ‘Tata’ name.
The biggest hurdles for an EV are range and charging time. Well, the Avinya is showing some positive signs for models under the Gen 3 platform, as it will be capable of more than 500km of range. The battery packs will support ultra-fast charging with a minimum 500 kms worth of range being charged in under 30 minutes. This is once again thanks to the Gen 3 platform’s flexibility in not needing to accommodate ICE powertrains.
With eco-friendly being the trend everywhere, including the automotive industry, Tata Motors will also be going ‘green’ by using sustainable materials for its Gen 3 models. This was previewed in the Avinya with its luxurious, yet minimalistic cabin.
In an age where a plethora of screens with complicated tech are taking up most of the cabin real estate in modern cars, it's refreshing to see Tata keep things simple. In the Avinya, aside from a sleek screen below the dashboard, and mirror camera displays, the main digital screen is on the steering wheel which controls all in-car functions via voice commands.
Models under Tata’s new Generation 3 platform will benefit from the fact that they will boast advanced driver assists. While the specifics aren’t revealed, some common bits should include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist
While we can’t wait to see what Tata’s first production model under the Generation 3 platform will be capable of, it’ll be a long wait, as it is slated to arrive by 2025. Until then, you can check out the Avinya concept in all possible angles.
