Its first EV could be an electric SUV based on the Future-e concept

  • Suzuki plans to set up EV battery manufacturing in 2026.

  • Vehicle recycling plant to come up in Gujarat in 2025.

  • First Maruti Suzuki electric vehicle should be priced well under Rs 20 lakh.

Maruti Suzuki is one step closer to building electric vehicles (EVs) in India. Suzuki of Japan has entered an agreement with the Gujarat government to invest the equivalent of Rs 10,440 crore to build manufacturing units for electric cars and EV batteries in the state. We could see the first locally manufactured all-electric model from Maruti sometime in 2025.

The global carmaker has planned a massive investment of Rs 3,100 crores to expand the capacity of its facility near Ahmedabad for EV production. The plant currently builds cars and engines for the domestic and export markets.

In 2026, a new EV battery manufacturing unit will also come up beside the existing production units. The bulk of Suzuki’s investment, Rs 7,300 crore, is reserved for the construction of this facility. In addition, Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu will also get a new vehicle recycling facility in the state in 2025 at a cost of Rs 45 crore.

We expect the first all-electric Maruti Suzuki to debut around the same time in 2025. It could be an electric SUV based on the Futuro-e concept that was unveiled at Auto Expo 2020. It’s too early to talk about specifics, but you can expect a price tag of well under Rs 20 lakh, which would make the Maruti EV a rival to the Tata Nexon EV and upcoming MG and Hyundai electric cars.

Maruti Suzuki has repeatedly asserted the impracticality of EVs, owing to their high cost of development, import and production. However, with ever-growing charging infrastructure and steadily evolving buyer preferences for zero-emissions vehicles, we expect the market will be ripe for Suzuki’s EV models when India’s largest carmaker introduces its first electric car.
