It made its debut as a concept at the Auto Expo in 2018.
The electric hatchback could deploy Tata’s Ziptron platform.
Could get a few cosmetic tweaks over the standard Tiago.
Tata could launch the electric Tiago in early 2023.
On the occasion of World EV day, Tata has announced the Tiago EV as its next upcoming EV. It will enjoy a segment of its own as an entry-level electric hatchback and will be among the 10 EVs Tata plans to launch by 2025.
The gist of the announcement
Tata is dedicated to the electrification of its portfolio. It boasts the maximum number of EVs present in any mass-market marque’s portfolio in India and the number is only going to increase with the introduction of the Tiago EV.
The brand has also established an ecosystem for its electric vehicles, called the Tata UniEVerse, which will further streamline the adoption of EVs in the country.
Unfortunately, details are scarce as Tata only announced the electric hatchback’s arrival without actually revealing any details about it. However, we expect the EV to utilise the same Ziptron platform as its larger siblings. Its powertrain specifications are likely to be in the same ballpark as the Tigor EV’s 75PS/170Nm electric motor fed using a 25kWh battery pack offering a claimed range of around 300km.
If compatible with fast charging, the electric hatchback could be recharged from 0-80 per cent in 60 minutes. We also expect Tata to incorporate a few electric-specific division revisions to set apart the EV from its ICE-powered sibling.
Being smaller than the Tigor EV, which is priced from Rs 12.49 lakh, the Tiago EV could retail from around Rs 11 lakh onwards. For reference, the ICE-powered Tiago is sold between Rs 5.40 lakh and Rs 7.82 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). Tata could launch the electric hatchback in early 2023.
