The Tiago EV to become the most affordable electric car in the Indian market

  • Concept of the Tiago EV was first brewed at the Auto Expo in 2018.

  • Will be showcased on September 28 for the first time.

  • Design changes could include EV-specific revisions.

  • Could get the same 26kWh or lesser battery pack with a minimum claimed range of 300km as the Tigor EV.

Tata is the first manufacturer that realized and tapped the looming potential of the electric car fray in India. And the brand is about to build on that statement with a new product, the Tiago EV, which is slated to make its debut on September 28. The electric hatchback will enter the EV space with no direct competitors and it is set to become the most affordable EV in the country.

Specifications

While Tata has kept all specification details under wraps, we expect the electric hatchback to deploy Tata’s Ziptron electric powertrain, which is currently used for the Tigor EV and Nexon EV. It could get the same 26kWh battery pack as the Tigor EV that sends a charge to a 75PS/170Nm electric motor. It could offer a claimed range of up to 300 km.

If the Tiago EV utilises the aforementioned Ziptron tech, it could be compatible with fast charging that allows a 0-80 percent charge in 60 minutes. As is the case with the usual electric-ICE siblings, expect Tata to incorporate a few design changes to set the Tiago EV apart from its ICE-powered cousin.

Price and rivals

Tata could retail the electric hatchback from Rs 10 lakh onwards. For comparison, its bigger sibling, the Tigor EV, is priced between Rs 12.24 lakh and Rs 13.39 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). Expected to launch soon after the unveil, it will be the first of its kind, enjoying a segment unbothered by rivals.
