Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), where the India marque will utilise JLR’s Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. The Indian marque has borrowed the licensing for the platform from JLR by paying a royalty fee and will utilise the EMA’s electrical architecture, electric drive unit, battery pack and manufacturing know-hows.
This platform will spawn Tata’s pure-EV only cars and will underpin the Indian marque’s Avinya premium electric car series. For the unknown, the Avinya is a crossover concept that broke cover in 2022 and gets a futuristic design and plenty of tech onboard. To know more about the Avinya concept, check out our in-depth unveiling report.
JLR’s EMA platform is still under development and will be spawning a handful of midsize electric SUVs from 2025 onwards. The British marque says it is optimised for a spacious cabin, technology, features and software. Both the brands will also enter into an Engineering Services Agreement (ESA) to support Tata, if the platform needs changes for the first EV.
Commenting on this news, Anand Kulkarni, Chief Product Officer and Head HV Programmes, Tata Motors Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, said, “Avinya stands for ‘Innovation’ and represents our vision for a new paradigm in personal mobility. Being built on an architecture that is equipped with the latest advances in new age technology, software and artificial intelligence, Avinya will spawn a new breed of world class EVs, with global standards in efficiency and range. We are delighted to collaborate on the EMA platform with JLR for actualizing this vision”.
The new EMA platform will support level-2 autonomous driving capabilities as well as comfort and convenience features. Also, with the platform supporting over the air software and feature updates, it will help Tata adopt these new technologies. And mainly, it’s expected to have a five star Euro NCAP rating, which is one of the strictest NCAP testing across the globe.
The news of Tata using JLR’s platform for the Avinya is massive news. It helps Tata save costs as it doesn’t have to develop a standalone EV platform, but also helps the Indian marque to develop premium EVs. As for when the Avinya is expected to make it to production, you can expect it to enter production sometime in 2025.
