[UPDATE: Ultraviolette has launched the F77 in India. Full details in our launch story]
The era of electric two-wheelers isn't coming; it's already here. Even though they still make up a small portion of the Indian two-wheeler market, they are where the action is when it comes to the exciting realms of two-wheeled vehicular development. Hence, as we aim to get greener this Diwali, we look at five electric scooters and electric bikes that look to be at the forefront of electric innovation.
Ather Energy carved out a solid niche for itself as a purveyor of cutting-edge technology packed with exciting performance. Emerging to be the first entrant in the premium e-scooter segment in India, the Ather 450X changed the way we looked at electric scooters, especially with its Warp mode that made electric mobility extremely fun. While its latest avatar left us wanting more, it continues to be a reliable sporty scooter and perhaps the best electric alternative to internal combustion scooters currently.
Is there any list that the Ola S1 does not make its presence felt in? Well, the Ola S1 is a product that ticks almost every criteria in every aspect of electric mobility. And yes, unfortunately this also includes some not-so-good ones. And while we agree with Ola that the S1 is a revolutionary product, we wish Ola accepts that there are some glitches which dulls the overall riding experience. The Ola S1 does pack an impressive motor and battery pack, however the BMS and underpinnings are a letdown. But these aren’t aspects that can’t be fixed, as Ola has got its basics right, which is why the S1 packs promise.
While electric scooters are perceived to be sporty and futuristic, TVS stuck to its basics and did what it knows best. It delivered the TVS iQube, which essentially is an electric scooter designed to appeal to everyone in the family, in three different variants. It is comfortable and easy to ride, while also packing sufficient performance to make commutes fun. Not to mention a contemporary design that brings it enough attention while it silently whirls past people on the road. Read what we liked about the TVS iQube S in our road test review.
Bengaluru-based startup Ultraviolette made waves in the Indian EV space with the introduction of the F77 back in November 2019. And owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the launch plans for the F77 were delayed. However, the company used this time to further improve the F77, and almost three years later, unveiled a product that dropped our jaws wide open. With an incredible claimed range of 307km amongst other substantial changes, the Ultraviolette F77 has come a long way from the prototype that we had ridden back in 2019. Ultraviolette will start pre-bookings on October 23 for Rs 10,000 on its official website. The company plans to keep the production limited to 15,000 units in the first year. Launch is scheduled for November 24.
The air of Bengaluru seems to be full of electric innovations, as the final entrant in this list, like all the EVs preceding, has also been conceptualised and developed in Bengaluru. And while the Simple One was launched 15 months ago, the company is yet to begin deliveries. In fact, Simple has announced that the deliveries have been pushed to the first quarter of 2023. We were absolutely enthralled by the performance after riding it, and the Simple One packs immense promise as it packs everything it takes to rule the premium, performance-focussed electric scooter segment.
