TVS is planning to convert one of its most reliable workhorse in India into an electric two-wheeler. A design patent for an electric TVS XL has been leaked online and it looks quite similar to its petrol-powered sibling, the TVS XL100.
First and foremost, the frame and design of the TVS XL electric seems pretty similar to the TVS XL100 with its standard and bare bones moped design with a telescopic fork and dual shock absorber suspension setup. Even the drum brakes seem to be taken from its sibling.
While it's too early to talk about the motor details, we can see that it gets a swingarm-mounted motor, connected to the wheel via a belt drive. Interestingly, the motor is placed between the swingarm. This ensures there’s no need to alter the dimensions of the chassis. TVS chose to not use a hub motor as mounting the motor on the wheel would require heavily redesigning the chassis of the moped and reassessing the packing components of the vehicle. And that would make the development a more expensive, lengthy and complicated affair.
In addition to reduced development & engineering costs, we hope the swingarm-mounted motor also translates into competitive pricing of the e-moped. Secondly, the wheel will be free of bearing the burden of hub-motor, so a conventional spoke wheel can be used and repairing the tyre will be much easier as compared to a hub-mounted motor. It also eliminates the need to adjust for belt slack, as that would be the case in frame-mounted motors.
Apart from that, you can see the battery pack attached to the spine of the frame. And that should be able to offer a sub-100km range.
In terms of performance, it could be similar to its petrol-powered counterpart, the XL 100. For perspective, the XL 100 gets a 99.7cc single-cylinder engine, makes 4.3PS and 6.5Nm, and weighs 86kg kerb.
Summing up, considering the patent design has just surfaced, the launch of e-Moped is quite some time away. And once launched, it will go up against the upcoming Kinetic e-Luna. Oh, and if you want to know more about the e-Luna, you can head to our exclusive story here.
