VW’s office chair is helping promote the carmaker’s commercial vehicle division overseas.
The one-off office chair has car-like comfort features and tech.
It has a two-wheel drive electric powertrain with a top speed of 20kmph.
What happens when a carmaker decides to build an office chair? Well, if the carmaker in question is Volkswagen, the chair turns out to be a tech-laden piece of motorised furniture that we can’t help but love. Created by a team of engineers at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Norway, the electric office chair is a one-off chair project that’s being used to promote the carmaker’s commercial vehicle division.
At first glance, the office chair looks like a regular gaming chair with a seatbelt and Volkswagen logo embroidered into the headrest. The magic lies in its wheels – the chair has a pair of big wheels that are driven by an electric motor, with a fifth wheel at the back to control the steering.
Volkswagen’s office chair has a heating function for the winters, and if you’re up working late, a pair of headlights to light up a dark corridor, alongside a set of cool LED lights on the sides that are inspired by the daytime running lights in cars. It even has an infotainment screen in the left armrest, paired with speakers that let you listen to music at your desk or on the move.
