The electric SUV is set to be unveiled on November 9
  • EX90 will be Volvo’s flagship electric SUV that’ll replace the XC90 in the future.

  • Will get an EV powertrain with over 100kWh of battery capacity.

  • To have the highest amount of sustainable material use in the Volvo lineup.

  • India launch should be on the cards.

Volvo has been putting out a series of videos previewing various aspects of its upcoming all-electric vehicle (EV), the EX90. We aren’t sure what it looks like just yet; that will be revealed on November 9. But we do know that it’ll be a technologically advanced electric car with cutting-edge technology that’s made from environmentally conscious materials.

Sustainably sourced luxurious materials

Since we don’t know how it looks on the outside, let’s just jump straight inside. Similar to the existing Volvo XC40 Recharge, the EX90 will get wool blend upholstery that’s certified according to strict standards for animal safety and welfare.

Instead of using plastic, Volvo has developed a new bespoke composite material called Nordico, which us made from recycled PET bottles and biological material derived from forests in Sweden and Finland, specifically, pine resin.

Apart from the environmentally conscious new plastic, the EX90 has real wood trim pieces made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood that doesn’t harm the environment.

Overall, the EX90 uses almost 50kg of recycled and environmentally conscious materials, setting a high bar for future cars from the carmaker. Even the carpets are made from regenerated polyamide (nylon).

Electric powertrain with two-way charging

The EX90 will use a larger battery pack than Volvo’s existing EVs. The carmaker hasn’t specified the size, but indicates that it’ll be over 100kWh, giving the EV enough range for your daily duties and then some.

It’ll be capable of powering other devices and appliances, and even smaller EVs such as an e-bike, with the car. In essence, you’ll be able to use the EX90 as a mobile power bank while camping, for example.

Moreover, the EV will be capable of two-way power supply, also called vehicle-to-grid, which means it’ll be able to power your house when the grid is down. Volvo is experimenting with a new concept that’ll enable you to sell power to the grid using the car during times when the electricity tariff is at the peak.

Safety and assistance features

If you haven’t heard it before, Volvo is aiming for zero deaths and serious injuries in its cars. With its cars already laden with airbags and other active and passive safety tech, the carmaker has been focussing on improving the accident prevention systems in its cars.

The EX90 will get a LiDar-based, 360-degree monitoring system that’ll evaluate traffic and road conditions around the car full-time. It’ll use multiple cameras, lasers and ultrasonic sensors to ‘read’ the road better than its human driver and work in conjunction with the already-present driver assistance and active safety features (such as forward collision prevention and lane keeping assist) to ensure passenger safety.

Moreover, it has a sophisticated two-camera-based driver attention monitoring system that’ll keep an eye (get it?) on the driver’s gaze. If the driver is inebriated or sleepy, the camera can read those gaze patterns even if the driver’s eyes are open. In such a case, the car will stick to its lane using lane keeping assist, or slow down on the shoulder and come to a stop.

In addition, the EX90 will have interior radar systems to read if you’ve left a child or pet in the car. The system will warn you when locking the doors and remind, you using the centre touchscreen, to not leave children or pets in locked cars.

The Volvo EX90 will pack all this impressive tech and more when it’s launched, likely sometime  in 2023. It might be a while before it comes to India, but since the XC40 Recharge electric SUV already exists here and the C40 Recharge is on its way, we expect the flagship EX90 EV to reach our shores at some point as well.
