The C40 Recharge is a XC40 Recharge SUV at its core, but with a more sporty and attractive coupe-esq roofline

  • Volvo C40 Recharge to launch on September 4, bookings to open the next day.

  • It shares its platform with the XC40 Recharge compact SUV.

  • Gets the same 408PS dual-electric motor setup powering all four wheels.

  • Packs a 78kWh battery pack which offers a WLTP-claimed range of up to 530km.

  • Deliveries will also begin in September.

Volvo is set to expand its lineup in India by bringing the C40 Recharge SUV-coupe, which is set for a launch on September 4. However, you’ll have to wait an additional day after its price announcement to actually put your name down for one. It will be a locally assembled (CKD) offering similar to its SUV sibling, and deliveries are slated to begin in September.

Design deets

The C40 Recharge shares more than just its platform with the XC40 Recharge. Both look identical when viewed head on with the same front fascia with a closed upper grille. The DRLs within the sleek headlights imitate Thor’s hammer and the three-piece bumper gets flanking fog lamps that rest in a stylish black-coloured housing.

Changes become apparent in profile as the sloping coupe-like roofline gives away the nature of the EV. The 19-inch wheels have been sampled directly from the XC40 Recharge, and we aren’t complaining.

The rear is a bit more distinguished with the sleek S-shaped tailights along with two roof spoilers, one on each end of the rear windscreen. It does look sportier in comparison, but the sloping roofline is bound to eat into the headroom for rear passengers.

Cabin & features

Even the cabin layout is identical with a portrait-style 9-inch touchscreen, which is slightly tilted towards the driver. Sleek vertical air vents flank the screen and the dashboard. The features list is made up of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, powered front seats (with heating and cooling function), a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, and dual-zone climate control. There’s no start-stop button as it allows you to simply put the car into drive if it detects the key inside.

Ofcourse, Volvo is famous for its safety tech and kit. Resultantly, the C40 packs a bunch of safety equipment like multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, and a 360-degree camera along with ADAS features including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring system, and a parking assistant.

Powertrain

Powering the C40 Recharge is the same 408PS/660Nm dual motor setup from the XC40 Recharge. It spins all four wheels and gets its juice from an improved 78kWh battery pack, which boasts a WLTP-claimed range of 530km. Fast charging compatibility will allow for a 10-80 percent recharge time of just 27 minutes.

Expected price

The Volvo C40 Recharge will sit alongside the XC40 Recharge in Volvo’s pure-electric lineup and will offer customers a sportier alternative. It is likely to be priced higher than its SUV counterpart, which retails at Rs 56.90 lakh (ex-showroom). It will take the fight to the likes of the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
