The Creta EV is likely being used for component testing for Hyundai’s new EV.
It has a near-identical design as the existing Creta save for EV-specific upgrades.
The test mule missed out on a charging port and had the cable going under its hood.
Hyundai will likely launch a mass-market EV by 2024, having a range of over 300km.
It wasn’t long ago that we got a look at a Hyundai Creta EV prototype. The electrified version of the SUV – which is likely a test bed for Hyundai’s new mass-market EV – was recently spotted again, this time at a charging station.
The test mule was seen in the same grey colour as before, having an identical design as the existing Creta (naturally missing out the tailpipe), and surprisingly didn’t have any external charging port unlike the other EVs. Instead, the charging cable was straightaway plonked into the bonnet of the electric SUV. The test mule had the same floor-mounted battery pack as the previously seen test mule.
Although the test mule was based on the Creta EV, Hyundai isn’t expected to launch it in India as seen. If at all that plan does get the green light, the facelifted Creta could very well spawn the EV derivative.
Since 2021, there have been reports of Hyundai developing a mass-market EV for our market that’s set to go on sale in 2024. It was believed to be an EV version of an outgoing internal combustion engine (ICE) model having a real world range of more than 300km.
If it has to take on the affordable electric SUV space in India, Hyundai needs to come up with an EV whose prices will range from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). This will make it either a sub-4m SUV or a compact SUV offering, worthy enough of taking on the likes of the Tata Nexon EV and the Mahindra XUV400.
