Yamaha has revealed its roadmap for electric mobility by unveiling its new e-scooter, called the Neo’s, along with the E01 prototype and its new range of e-bikes. The Japanese manufacturer, however, has plans to launch only the Neo’s this year.
The Yamaha Neo’s has been one of Team Blue’s most popular 50cc scooters overseas for quite some time now, and now the brand has decided to rename the E02 concept from the 2019 Tokyo Show as the new Neo’s. Though the official specs will be announced a few weeks from now, Yamaha has revealed some interesting details about the upcoming e-scooter.
The Yamaha Neo’s electric scooter will have the performance equivalent of a 50cc scooter. The company mentioned that the diminishing popularity of 50cc scooters due to the increasing number of accessible 125cc products and the stringent emission norms have led to this decision.
While the e-scooter’s performance is similar to a 50cc scooter, it packs quite a few premium features, including a removable lithium-ion battery. Now, this decision also hints at the fact that Yamaha could be looking at a swappable battery infrastructure. Last year, the Japanese marque inked a deal with KTM-Piaggio and Honda for the same. This will help Yamaha keep the pricing competitive.
Yamaha also showcased the E01 electric scooter that was spied earlier this year. The performance of this e-scooter will be on par with its 125cc ICE counterparts. However, unlike the Neo’s, the E01 will make its global debut only by 2025. Till then, Yamaha plans to have a pilot run in one European city, using the E01 as a shared mobility transport option. Then, with the data collected from the pilot run, Yamaha will configure the production-spec E01.
Yamaha has also stepped into the E-bike business with four models. Though the company has just showcased the e-bikes now and mentioned that specifications will be announced later this year, it is clear that these e-bikes are rebranded products from Italian company Fantic. So, even though Yamaha is yet to announce the details officially, you can get an idea of the specs from Fantic’s website right now.
Another pedelec from Yamaha is the B01, an EV that offers the convenience of an e-bike and the performance of an e-scooter. The bikemaker aims to share more details about this product by the end of this year. It is likely to be the same as the Fantic Issimo, the pedelec on which the B01 is based.
Yamaha stepping into the electric mobility business doesn’t come as a surprise, as the brand has been working on shared battery technology since 2019. Also, with Honda planning to establish its hold in the EV segment in India, we expect Yamaha to also grace our shores with its EV by 2025. With options like Hero Vida e-scooter and Suzuki Burgman Electric awaiting launch, India’s EV space is surely going to witness a lot of action.
