UPDATE: Hyundai India has launched the Exter SUV from Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Hyundai Exter is all set to be launched in India on July 10. And just moments before its debut, we bring you the clearest first look of the Tata Punch rival via these exclusive images. The Hyundai Exter has started reaching dealership yards and bookings are underway for a while now. It will be the carmaker’s smallest SUV, slotting below the Venue in Hyundai’s lineup.
Starting with the styling first. The Exter features an upright and butch nose featuring a sleek grille design and funky H-shaped DRLs. Below it is a large rectangular airdam with rectangular projector headlamps. And the silver skid plate below that gives it a nice macho appearance.
The Exter’s silhouette is boxy and upright, giving it a nice SUV-like vibe. Adding a dash of ruggedness are the squared out wheel arches with chunky body cladding. These are also nicely filled out with 5-spoke alloys. Shifting our focus to the C-pillar, it gets a black design element to give the roof a nice floating effect.

At the rear, the Hyundai Exter gets square tail lamps featuring the H-motif and is connected by a gloss black plastic trim. Rounding off the overall design is the chunky bumper with a skid plate.
Inside, the Exter’s cabin is a ditto xerox copy of the Grand i10 Nios, which ain’t a bad thing, as the dashboard looks upmarket. However, to distinguish it from the hatch, the Exter gets an all-black colour scheme with funky green inserts. The seats have ‘EXTER’ embossed in bold to remind you which car you’re sitting in.

In terms of features, the Exter gets an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digitised driver’s display, cruise control, automatic climate control, a wireless phone charger and keyless entry with push button start. On the safety front, it gets six airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
The Exter gets the Nios’ 83PS 1.2-litre petrol engine, teamed with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. This engine can also be had with a factory fit CNG that’s offered with the manual gearbox only. There won’t be a diesel engine option at all.
We suspect pricing for the Hyundai Exter to start from around Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). It will go up against the Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Ignis as well as some variants of the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
