India has always been a market with huge demand for cars running on alternative fuels such as CNG. With aftermarket players already dominating the market, few auto manufacturers offer their products with a factory-fitted option of CNG, to cater to this growing demand. This in turn has flooded the market with all segments including hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs getting their share of CNG models in their respective lineups. In this article we list down the top 10 recently launched cars with factory-fitted CNG on sale under Rs 20 lakh bracket.
The Tata Tiago has been recently launched with Tata’s i-CNG technology with an AMT transmission. It is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a newly introduced AMT transmission. In CNG mode it delivers 73 PS and 95 Nm. The claimed fuel efficiency for CNG variants is 26.49 km/kg. The CNG option is available in 5 broad trims: XE, XM, XT, XZ+ and the XZA+ (automatic transmission). The Tata Tiago CNG price ranges from Rs 6.59 lakh to Rs 8.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Tata Punch has been selling like hot cakes since its launch. This practical micro-SUV packs in tons of features, and is also offered with factory fitted CNG option which Tata terms as the i-CNG technology. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, with the CNG options produces 73.5 PS and 103 Nm. It’s claimed mileage is 27 km/kg with the CNG drivetrain. The Punch CNG is offered in 4 broad trims, Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Accomplished Dazzle. The Punch CNG is priced from Rs 7.22 lakh - Rs 9.84 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Hyundai Exter has garnered its own liking since its launch and is a direct rival to the Tata Punch. Based on its hatch-back version, the Grand i10 Nios, it commands more ground clearance and larger overall dimensions. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol unit mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, it gets a CNG option which produces 69 PS and 95.2 Nm. The Hyundai Exter CNG is offered in two variants, S and SX, priced at Rs 8.43 lakh and Rs 9.16 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, which essentially is the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, has been introduced with the option of CNG. The crossover which debuted in April gets a 1.2-litre CNG powertrain producing 77 PS and 98 Nm. The CNG option is available in just the base “E” variant which is priced at Rs 8.71 lakh (ex-showroom).
Maruti Suzuki has recently launched the CNG variants for the Fronx. This CNG unit has been borrowed from its sibling, the Baleno. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol unit mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the CNG powertrain produces 77.5 PS and 98.5 Nm. The CNG option for the Fronx is available in two trims Sigma and Delta priced at Rs 8.46 lakh and Rs 9.32 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively.
The Tata Altroz has been recently added with CNG variants across its line-up. Based on the twin-tank i-CNG platform of Tata, the Altroz CNG is available in 6 broad trims XE, XM+, XM+(S), XZ, XZ+(S), and XZ+O(S) priced from Rs 7.59 lakh to Rs 10.64 lakh (ex-showroom). The Altroz gets a 1.2-litre NA engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission which when powered by CNG, produces 73.5 PS and 103 Nm, identical to that of the Tata Punch.
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza has been one of the highest selling compact SUVs in the segment. Powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine, in CNG mode it produces 87.8 PS and 121.5 Nm. Available in all trims Lxi, Vxi and Zxi, the CNG variants are priced from Rs 9.29 lakh to Rs 12.25 lakh (ex-showroom). The CNG models claim to deliver 25.51km/kg of fuel economy.
Badge engineering has been going pretty well for both Toyota and Maruti Suzuki by sharing mass-market vehicles. The Toyota Rumion, which is the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga also gets a CNG option. The CNG option for the Rumion can be opted for only in the base “S” variant, which is priced at Rs 11.39 lakh (ex-showroom). Powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, the CNG powertrain produces 88 PS and 121.5 Nm.
The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara has been one of the highest performing SUVs for the brand as it is available in multiple powertrain options including a Hybrid system. It is also offered with an option of CNG in 2 trims: Delta and Zeta. Both the variants are priced at Rs Rs 13.15 lakh and Rs 14.96 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively. It is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine which when working on CNG produces 88 PS and 121.5 Nm.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and fares equally when it comes to features and powertrain options. Powered by a similar 1.5-litre engine it produces identical figures to the Grand Vitara (88 PS and 121.5 Nm). The CNG option is available in two trims: S variant costing Rs 13.71 lakh (ex-showroom) and the G variant costing Rs 15.59 lakh (ex-showroom).
