2022 was a year of growth. Yes, in the literal sense, everything is on the rise- the stock market, fuel prices, Russia’s attempt at World War III and even covid seems to be on a surge (please, God no). But in the automotive world, the trend was literally the opposite - downsizing. Everything we’ve known to love has been a prey of downsizing but even still, surprisingly, the cars are getting quicker than they ever were.
So before the antics for the new year unfold, we take a look back at the five quickest cars we tested this year:
Mini’s first EV is the fifth fastest car in India we tested this year. With a recorded 7.13s time for the sprint from nought to 100kmph, the Cooper SE, thrashed its own claimed time (7.3s), surprisingly. When launched, the electric Mini was welcomed with open arms, so much so that its first batch sold out in the pre-bookings itself. Head to our story to know how a 184PS e-motor can transform a Mini into the perfect urban EV.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that a John Cooper Works Mini Cooper is in the list. The quintessential hot hatchback bags fourth place with a 0-100kmph time of 6.19s. Given the fact that it’s priced at just around Rs 50 lakh, the Mini Cooper John Cooper Work is not just a souped-up go kart, but it's also rather affordable for something this fun – as reiterated by our senior editor in his road test review.
Audi’s flagship sedan, the A8 L, has no business being in this list for something its size. But a peek inside its hood and you know how it did. The 3-litre V6 petrol engine under the hood thumps out 340PS, which is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. All of this translates to a tested 6.05s time for the sprint from 0-100kmph. Know all the details of the facelifted A8 L here
A 2.0-litre four cylinder turbo-petrol engine. That’s where the Mercedes AMG A45 S gets its puissance (421PS and 500Nm) from. The mind boggling numbers continue with a recorded 4.08s to 100kmph and mind you, Mercedes claims the same in 3.9s. One of the finest examples of German engineering and definitely one of the best to grace our shores. Take in how it feels to be a passenger in the hot hatchback here.
Probably not what you were expecting to be at the front of the list. But to be fair, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S and its 612PS and 800Nm can undoubtedly put to shame the cars you had in mind. With a recorded time of 3.61s from nought to 100kmph, the super sports saloon is the quickest of the lot we’ve clocked this year and you can know more about its dynamics here.
This is it for the cars we tested this year. But in all fairness, we should mention that there were a few other cars that we drove but couldn't actually test for a time; hence, they couldn’t make a case for themselves. But we hope the coming year will change that and bring more cars, more full-sends, and more adventures for us to share with you!
