Yamaha has updated its Japanese portfolio with the launch of the 2022 MT-25. Key upgrades now include the engine being revised to comply with Japan’s new Reiwa 2 emissions standards, which are roughly the equivalent to BS6/Euro 5 norms. Even though the mill meets the latest emissions regulation, the changes do not affect its claimed outputs of 35PS and 23Nm.
Additionally, there’s now an optional quickshifter module available along with a new inverted front fork by Iwata, a reputed Japanese suspension tuning company, along with a lightly restyled headlight cluster.
Whilst on the subject of equipment, it’s worth noting that the Japanese-spec version of Yamaha’s immensely popular quarter litre bike is equipped with ABS as standard, unlike the ones sold in South East Asian markets where it is optional.
The MT-25 continues to get a diamond-type steel frame, and has a wet-weight of only 166 kg, which is 3 kg lower than its predecessor. It packs an aggressive fascia that features a low-slung, full-LED headlight with twin-LED DRLs. Other features of the motorcycle include LED turn indicators, an LED taillight, a digital instrument cluster, and split-style seats. It also comes equipped with a 14-litre fuel tank.
Underpinnings of the MT-25 comprise revised upside down front fork and a rear monoshock to perform the suspension duties, while the bike rolls on a 110/70-17 tyre at the front and a 140/70-17 rear tyre. It gets ample stopping power from a two-piston caliper mated to 240mm disc at the rear and a two-piston caliper clamping a 298mm disc at the front.
The new 2022 MT-25 is priced at 632,500 Yen, equivalent to Rs. 3.87 lakh. The MT-25 is sold in markets that do not get the Yamaha MT-03, like select Southeast Asian markets and Japan. However, we neither have the MT-25 nor the MT-03, and Yamaha is less likely to bring the naked too, although its faired sibling, the updated Yamaha R3 is expected to be launched here in the near future.
The MT-25 would compete with the likes of KTM 250 Duke, Husqvarna Svartpilen, Bajaj Dominar 250, Suzuki Gixxer 250 and Honda CB300R.
