With back to back launches, Hyundai has updated its i20 premium hatchback alongside a refresher for its sportier i20 N Line version. Both get minor cosmetic tweaks and some new features, while retaining their engine options (somewhat). So let’s take a look at how similar or different the two avatars of the i20 are and let’s begin with the design.
The facelifted Hyundai i20 and i20 N Line are similar to look at, with a few inserts and tweaks on the latter that make it look just a tad sportier. They share the same reworked LED headlights and DRL signature. The outline of the grille is similar as well, but the N Line gets slightly different elements within it for a sportier look along with the Hyundai logo sitting in it, unlike the i20, where the H motif is pasted on top of it.
Differences get highlighted towards the bottom as the i20 N Line has a sportier bumper, thanks to the sharper cuts and creases for the fog lamps along with the red insert for the front lip. The standard i20, on the other hand, doesn’t get fog lamps now.

The profile of both the cars is similar, save for the sportier 16-inch alloy wheels and the red insert on the side sill and brake callipers in the i20 N Line. The standard i20 sits on 16-inch alloys as well but with a different design.
The rear, too, is identical for the most part. It's only down towards the bumper where you notice the real differences as the N Line sports a black diffuser in place of the silver skid plate. It also boasts dual exhaust tips that emit a throatier note.
While the overall layout is identical, there are two key differences inside the cabin of the i20 and i20 N Line. First, the sportier 3-spoke N Line-spec steering wheel and second, the all-black theme. Both of these are exclusive to the i20 N Line and the latter is complemented by red highlights stitching all over the cabin. The standard i20 gets a black/grey colour scheme and a four-spoke steering that is also seen in the Creta.

Features-wise, the two are inseparable. A few of the highlighting features include a Type-C charger (new addition), a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7-speaker Bose sound system, automatic climate control, a digital driver’s display, sunroof, wireless phone charger, keyless entry with push-button start, and cruise control.
Standard safety features include six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill-start assist, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, three-point seatbelts, and ISOFIX mounts.
This is where the Hyundai i20 and i20 N Line have their own personalities. Now you see, the former was previously available with both the 1.2-litre NA petrol engine and the 120PS 1-litre turbo-petrol mill. But the turbo-petrol engine is now only available with the N Line model, making the two respective engines as the sole options for the two different iterations of the hatchback. So if you want the more powerful engine, you have no other choice but to pick up the N Line.
The naturally aspirated engine can be had with either a 5-speed MT (83PS/114.7Nm) or a CVT (88PS/114.7Nm). The turbo-petrol engine now gets the option of a new 6-speed manual for a more involving drive experience or a 7-speed DCT.
Powertrains aside, the N Line also gets a few tweaks to its suspension and steering geometry alongside a slight tweak to its exhaust note. All of these revisions combine together to offer a more enthusiastic driving experience.

Without any surprises, the i20 N Line is the more expensive of the two, with a disparity of nearly Rs 3 lakh for their respective base-spec variants, and Rs 1.16 lakh for the top-spec variants. But in all fairness, the base-spec variant of the i20 is rudimentary and barebones, while the i20 N Line base-spec still comes loaded with a decent bit of kit.

The standard Hyundai i20 takes on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, and Tata Altroz. The i20 N Line on the other hand doesn’t really have any direct rivals and just offers a sportier alternative to the aforementioned premium hatchbacks.
