With the recent facelift of the Hyundai i20, a question arises: does this update make it stand out, or is it just a small improvement to the pre-facelift model? To find that out, we’ll be comparing Hyundai’s premium hatchback against the Tata Altroz, which is loaded with kit, gets plenty of powertrains and is certifiably safe.
Both the 2023 Hyundai i20 and the Tata Altroz feature upscale design elements and you won’t be hating either of them. The 2023 i20 boasts a refreshed front design with a parametric grille, while the Tata Altroz features swept-back headlights.
In profile, the i20 has much sharper lines and creases than the Altroz. It takes a sportier approach while the smoother lines and chunky arches of the Altroz makes it look more elegant. To give them a dash of sheen, both models sit on 16-inch dual-tone alloys in their higher-end variants.
At the rear, both models get split tail lamps whereas the i20 also gets a skid plate for a beefier look. But one point where the i20 beats the Altroz is that it gets LEDs for both headlights and taillights, making it look a dash more premium.

Both car cabins display a sense of sophistication, sporting a floating touchscreen infotainment system with a black and grey cabin theme. However, opting for the Altroz Dark Edition or the i20 N Line means you get a black hue on the inside for a sportier vibe. Inside the Tata Altroz, you'll find a black theme complemented by premium accents across the dashboard.
That said, the graphics on the infotainment system look a lot better than the Altroz’ old-school unit. But the Tata gets back at the i20 with a coloured 7-inch TFT display for the driver, which shows you a host of information. This brings us to the features section of both the cars.
First up, the common features. Both models get ambient lighting, a branded sound system, sunroof, connected car tech, and a wireless phone charger.
Notably, the i20 comes equipped with a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system while the Altroz currently makes do with a 7-inch unit. Both systems support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
Standard safety features in both the cars include ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, reverse parking sensors, and ISOFIX mounts for child seats. One area where the i20 beats the Altroz is the presence of six airbags as standard as opposed to two in the Tata. However, do note that despite the lesser airbag count, the Tata Altroz has achieved a 5-star NCAP crash test rating.
In terms of powertrains, the Hyundai i20 offers you only two choices: a 88PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine in the standard and a 120PS 1-litre turbo petrol for N-line versions. The former gets a 5-speed MT and CVT, while the latter features a 6-speed manual 7-speed DCT.
On the other hand, you are spoiled for choices in the Altroz. That said, if you want an automatic option in the Tata premium hatchback, your choice is limited to the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. And to make life easier, we have compiled the Altroz’ specifications in a table:
