The Verna will be plonked with a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, promising class-leading numbers. We compare it with the two most fun-to-drive sedans
One of Hyundai’s biggest launches this year for our market will be the the next-generation Verna. The compact sedan has been teased and pre-launch bookings are open. It will also debut the carmaker’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that is offered in the i30 overseas. And its specifications (which we’ll talk about in a bit) do seem impressive.
So yes, the Volkswagen Virtus GT and Skoda Slavia 1.5-litre, which are the go-to cars for performance in this segment, will soon have a threat. And in this report, we’ll be comparing the Hyundai’s engine with VW’s 1.5-litre TSI unit, as illustrated in this table below:

The Hyundai Verna’s new 1.5-litre unit puts out class-leading numbers at 159PS and 253Nm.
-
It betters the outgoing 1.4-litre engine by 19PS and 11Nm, while beating the VW’s unit narrowly by 9PS and 3Nm.
-
Hyundai’s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will replace the 1.4-litre unit in all their cars and Kia’s offerings.
-
Internationally, the 1.5-litre engine is offered with 48v mild-hybrid tech, but that might not make it to India.
-
One advantage the VW and Skoda cars have is the two-cylinder mode, shutting off half the cylinders for better fuel economy during light driving.
So yes, on paper, Hyundai’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine clearly has an advantage. But how it performs in the real-world is something we can answer once we drive the car. So stay tuned.
