Mahindra has finally launched one of the most-anticipated Indian SUVs of 2024, the Thar ROXX. It is the 5-door version of the standard Thar, which used to retail as a 3-door model only up until now. The new 5-door Thar gets some additions over the 3-door version, not just in its name and number of doors, but also its design cues, cabin and powertrain. In this article we will be taking you through the key differences between both off-roaders.
In addition to having a larger size and extra doors, the Thar ROXX also gets tweaked design elements, including a new 6-slat body-coloured grille, LED headlights with C-shaped LED DRLs and minor changes to the bumper. Let’s take a look at the dimensions to understand the difference in size:

Inside, both the Thars get an identical layout for the dashboard, but the Thar ROXX gets several new features and soft-touch material on the dashboard. To change up things furthermore, it also gets a beige-coloured upholstery, as opposed to the black seats offered with the 3-door model.

The Thar ROXX gets the same 2.2-litre diesel engine and 2-litre turbo-petrol engine that you get on the 3-door model, but the same engines have been tuned to produce more power and torque for the larger Thar. The higher output diesel engine of the Thar Roxx is only available with an automatic transmission.

Both 3-door and 5-door versions get the option of choosing between rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems. However, in the 5-door model, the 4x4 system is only available with the diesel variants.

As we can see in the table, there is hardly a difference here in the approach angle and departure angle, but the ramp breakover angle is higher in the 3-door model. The decrease here can be pinned down to the increase in the 5-door Thar’s wheelbase. Water wading capacity remains the same for both off-roaders.
The 3-door Thar is priced from Rs 11.25 lakh to Rs 17.60 lakh (ex-showroom). Mahindra has revealed prices for the RWD Thar Roxx that start from Rs 12.99 lakh and go uo Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Both the Thar avatars face competition from the Force Gurkha, which is also available in both 3- and 5-door versions. The two off-roaders also prove to be an alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
