Nissan has re-entered the premium full-size SUV segment in India with the X-Trail, which is expected to be launched on August 1, 2024. The X-Trail will be brought in as a CBU and will be sold in a single variant only. In this article, we will be comparing it with the Toyota Fortuner which currently rules the full-size SUV segment in India. Let’s find out which SUV would fare better on paper, and make a more practical buy.

The Fortuner is the clear winner here with larger dimensions. It excels in terms of length, width and height. It also offers a longer wheelbase, which means it has a more spacious cabin, at least on paper. So, for those who want an SUV with a larger road presence and a more macho appearance, the Fortuner should be your pick.

Both the SUVs are not the most well-equipped vehicles in the segment, and miss out on some features that are offered in other family SUVs or even compact SUVs. However, you still get all the creature comforts that you need on a regular basis. Out of the two, it is the X-Trail which slightly takes the edge here and proves to be a better equipped SUV. The Fortuner gets some useful equipment, but features like a sunroof and a 360-degree camera prove to be a big miss.

As seen in the table above, the Fortuner gets the option of both diesel and petrol powertrains, while the X-Trail gets a sole petrol engine. Comparing the petrol engines, the Nissan’s unit has the smaller displacement, but generates more torque when compared to the one on the Fortuner. That being said, power figures for the petrol engines are almost identical.

A point to note is that the Fortuner comes with the option of a 4WD system as well for the diesel engine, along with the rear-wheel drivetrain. The X-Trail is only available in a front-wheel drive setup.
Prices for the Nissan X-Trail have not been announced yet, but it is expected to be priced around Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). The Fortuner on the other hand, is priced from Rs 33.43 to Rs 51.44 lakh (ex-showroom). These two SUVs face competition from the likes of Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan, Jeep Meridian and Hyundai Tucson.
Both Fortuner and X-Trail are SUVs that will stand out on our Indian roads and catch attention. So, if you are in the market for an SUV with a road presence, you won’t go wrong with either. The Fortuner misses out on some features, but makes up for it with multiple powertrains on offer and a well established brand name. Keeping in mind the fact that Toyota is a well-established brand in India with better after-sales service, it would make more sense to pick the Fortuner over the X-Trail.
