The BMW M5 has always been a favourite among enthusiasts as a track-worthy road car with outstanding appeal. The next generation of the German super saloon has now been revealed after a long hiatus of development, which has resulted in it getting mildly electrified. The 2025 BMW M5 has received a complete powertrain overhaul along with cosmetic enhancements both inside and out. Let's delve in more to find out all that's new in the 2025 BMW M5.
Aggressive, menacing, and all other adjectives you can think on those lines–is the first impression anyone will get having a look at the new M5. The outgoing sleek design makes way for more angular proportions, with plenty of cuts and creases around the car to give it a distinctive appearance. The illuminated BMW M kidney grille gets an enclosed gloss-black finish and stands out from the rest, along with the sporty bumpers with large air intakes. Similar to the regular 5 Series, it features an all-new LED headlamp setup with signature DRLs and lighting elements.
Moving to the sides, it features large ceramic brakes, M Light Alloy wheels in 20-inch and 21-inch size options, carbon-fibre ORVMs, optional carbon-fibre roof, and M5 badging behind the rear quarter glass on the C-pillar. At the back, it features a carbon-fibre lip-spoiler, a large diffuser and a quad-setup exhaust system which makes it unmistakable to anything else on the roads.
BMW has left no stone unturned to give the interiors a sporty treatment at par with its current design ideology. To do so, plenty of M Sport-specific options have been included to enhance its sporty appeal. like an all new M Sport steering wheel with M Mode buttons and M Sport multi-adjustable seats. The centre stage is taken by a massive curved display housing a 12.3-inch digital driver’s instrumentation and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a HUD (heads-up display) along with few M-specific content. All this runs on the latest BMW Operating System 8.5 with augmented view functions and voice commands.
Of course, this being the M5, gets carbon fibre inlays on the dashboard and door panel trims instead of the faux wood used in the regular 5 Series. Further to enhance the sportiness inside the cabin, the ambient lights get illuminated in M-specific colours (red, blue and white).
Comfort and convenience features further encapsulate a four-zone automatic climate control system, wireless phone charging, heated and powered front seats, auto tailgate, a premium Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system and a panoramic moonroof. Furthermore, a M Carbon Exterior package can also be installed, along with optional Alcantara headliner, seat ventilation, heated steering wheel and M Performance forged light alloy wheels.
For improved safety, it gets adaptive suspensions with electronically controlled dampers and various driving modes to alter the driving dynamics. Standard safety equipment includes ABS, EBD, electronic stability control, 360-degree surround view camera with parking assist are on board along with ADAS features like blind spot detection, lane keep warning, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
Finally, let's walk the talk! You’ll be happy to know that BMW hasn’t gone the Mercedes way and ditched the big brawny engines. The 2025 BMW retains its 4.4-litre turbocharged high revving V8 petrol engine, but now is mated to a hybrid system with a 18.6 kWh battery pack which helps it produce a combined output of a whopping 727 PS and 1000 Nm.
A sprint from standstill to a 100 kmph comes under 3.5 seconds and 200 kmph comes in a bit shy of 10.9 seconds. The BMW M5 gets a top-speed limited to 250 kmph which can be further tuned to achieve 305 kmph with the optional M Driver’s Package. Furthermore, due to the hybrid powertrain which not just helps the car perform better, the M5 can now travel up to 69 km (WLTP cycle) in pure electric mode. It supports AC charging up to 7.4 kW. The new M5, like the outgoing model, comes in an all-wheel drivetrain and even gets rear wheel steering. For an enthralling driving experience, the driving modes enable the disengagement of the front axle to send all the power to the rear wheels with the Dynamic Stability Control switched off.
It is hard to say if and when the new M5 will arrive on our shores, but if it happens, it will carry a price tag north of Rs 1.8 crore. Internationally, it rivals other luxury performance sedans like the Mercedes Benz E 63 and Audi RS 7.
