The sub-4m SUV segment stands as the bridge between hatchback and compact SUVs, offering people a taste of both worlds. The segment rakes in huge numbers every month, and hence, the numerous options available doesn't come as a surprise. One of the latest ones on the block, the Toyota Taisor, promises to be a fun little offering with its turbo-petrol powertrain.
It’s so fun in fact, that it beats a host of its rivals in real-world performance, and that’s what we are going to have a look at in this story. A quick spec check before the actual result:

While all the cars in this list get a 1-litre three-cylinder engine, the XUV 3XO is the only one with a bigger 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. As a result, it is the most powerful of the lot, while the Taisor is the least powerful sub-4m SUV in this list. It is also the only one to benefit from a mild-hybrid assist.
All cars, save for the Kia Sonet (iMT) get a proper manual transmission along with the option of different automatics. The Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger get a CVT option, while the 3XO and Taisor get a torque converter automatic transmission. The Hyundai Venue and the Kia Sonet are the only ones to offer a dual clutch automatic transmission.

Despite being lower on power, the Taisor AT is the quickest of the lot and the only car with a sub 11 second time for the 0-100kmph sprint.
Only the Mahindra XUV 3XO comes close to the Taisor in the quarter mile test.
The braking test is the only parameter where the Taisor loses out and comes second last.
The Nissan Magnite CVT was the quickest to stop with a distance of just 39.75 metres, but the slowest to accelerate from 0kmph to 100kmph.
Surprisingly, the Kia Sonet was the slowest to clock the quarter mile with a time of 18.53 seconds.

While the Taisor, 3XO, Venue and Sonet are priced in a similar range, prices for the Magnite and Kiger are more affordable, thanks to a cheaper automatic (CVT) transmission option and less features on offer.
Apart from rivaling each other, they take on the Maruti Brezza, Fronx, and Tata Nexon.
