You’d expect January to be a comparatively slow month for carmakers, considering that almost everyone hikes the prices of their lineup as soon as the clock strikes 12 and it’s the first month of new year. But surprisingly, January ‘23 saw a 25.7% growth over December 2022 and a growth of 17.3% compared to the same month last year in terms of monthly sales.
Let’s see which five carmakers topped the list with their sales this January:
No surprises here. Maruti continues to dominate the Indian automotive market; and in doing so, recorded sales of 1,47,348 units in January 2023. That’s a 14.3% jump over its January 2022 sales figures. Compared to December 2022, it registered a growth of 31.5%, which is a considerable amount given the quantum that Maruti deals in. Currently, the carmaker has the largest share of the pie with a market share of 42.6%.
Hyundai grabs the second place in this list, but just by a minute margin. The Korean marque sold 50,106 units in January 2023, which is a 29% bump over its recorded sales in December 2022. It currently has a market share of 14.5%.

Not far behind Hyundai, Tata recorded sales of 47,990 units in January. With respect to its December 2022 sales, that’s a growth of 19.8%; and 17.7% compared to its January 2022 sales.
The Indian carmaker is breathing right down the neck of Hyundai when it comes to market share with a 13.9% hold, which is just 0.6% short of Hyundai’s.
With 33,040 units sold in January 2023, Mahindra grabs the fourth place on this list. That number is significantly higher than its previous year’s January sales, accounting for a 66.4% growth. The carmaker currently enjoys a market share of 9.6%.
Kia recorded a growth of 48.2% in January 2023, compared to the same period last year, with sales of 28,634 units. The recorded sales in January 2023 also account for an 88.6% growth compared to its December sales. The marque’s market share jumped from 6.6% in January 2022 to 8.3% in January 2023.

With a total recorded sales of 3,45,805 units in January 2023, it was undoubtedly a strong month for the Indian automotive industry. And we reckon the upcoming months until April might see a similar trend, given that the BS VI phase-2 emission norms are just on the horizon and will bring about a price bump with it.
