The full-size luxury SUV has been revealed as a runabout for the Russian elites

As major carmakers pull out of Russia owing to its ongoing war with Ukraine, the country’s local carmaker, Aurus, has introduced the Komendant luxury SUV. The formidably named Komendant is meant to be a rival to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga, and here’s all you need to know about it:

The looks department

Let’s address the elephant in the room – the Komendant is going for the same poise and imposing looks of the Rolls-Royce SUV, but without the hand-honed exterior panels and classic design. Nevertheless, it does look befitting of an oligarch’s garage, with its massive front grille and large chrome-lined air dams. Unlike the Cullinan, the Komendant doesn’t have suicide doors.

Plush interiors

Things look much better on the inside. The Komendant looks modern and plush with its rectangular air vents, dual-tone dashboard with ambient lighting and wide centre console. It’s not cutting-edge like modern luxury cars with their numerous screens and absent switchgear. Nevertheless, every surface you’d touch does seem to be upholstered in soft leather.

The Komendant comes with a four-seater layout with individual rear seats that get heating, ventilation and massaging functions. It also has a pull-out mini table for each of the rear passengers, a mini fridge and a pair of rear touchscreens for infotainment. It also has interior trim elements made of Russian wood, which “is famous for its durability and unique patterns,” according to the carmaker.

Hybrid V8 engine

Under the bonnet, the Aurus Komendant is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and hybrid system. It has a combined output of 598PS and 880Nm, enough to get to 100kmph in 6.5 seconds.

Price

Reportedly, Aurus Komendant’s price starts at the Indian equivalent of Rs 4.5 crore, which puts it right up there with the Rolls-Royces.

The Aurus Komendant is intended to be used by Russian State officials, but it remains to be seen how long it’ll be before the SUV reaches production. With numerous sanctions in place, Russia is likely to have a hard time procuring raw materials and components for the SUV.
