89 Percent Customers Preferred Mahindra Thar Diesel Over Petrol Variants

The Mahindra Thar has been a crowd favourite ever since it was introduced in the Indian market. Being offered in both 4x4 and 4x2 configuration and with petrol and diesel powertrains mated to manual and automatic transmission, it has served not just off-road enthusiasts, but also those looking for a lifestyle vehicle. 

Here’s how the Mahindra Thar has performed in April 2024, compared to last year:

It is pretty evident from the table above that 89 percent of buyers preferred the diesel powertrain over the petrol models. The sales figures also denote that the Thar diesel’s sales surged by 1204 units over last year, while the petrol model saw a decline by 345 units.

The Mahindra Thar is available with three engine choices: a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 118 PS and 300 Nm, a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 130 PS and 300 Nm, and a 2-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 150 PS and 320 Nm. 

The 1.5-litre diesel and the 2-litre turbo petrol engines can be opted with two-wheel-drive, while the turbo petrol and the larger 2.2-litre diesel engine are available with the four-wheel-drive models. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard across the range, but an automatic transmission is available only with the 2-litre turbo petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel engines. 

The Mahindra Thar, priced from Rs 11.34 lakh (ex-showroom), rivals other off-road capable SUVs like the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha. A 5-door version of the Thar will soon be launched in India, and is expected to further boost sales.
