The brand has used interesting tech to put tyres through their paces

Indian tyre manufacturer Apollo Tyres has inaugurated a new advanced tyre testing facility at its global research and development centre outside Chennai. With the key features being the new Flat-trac machine and an Anechoic Chamber, the brand aims to reduce the development cycle time for its upcoming products.

Flat-trac Machine

The Flat-Trac machine will allow the company to test the dynamic behaviour of its tyres in a simulated environment, with the machine testing and recording various parameters of the tyres’ performance. It’s capable of replicating manoeuvres such as high slip angles and varying degrees of lean.

Anechoic Chamber

The Anechoic chamber, meanwhile, will be used to test the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) properties of the company’s tyres over varying simulated terrains, allowing for its fine tuning. The tyres’ acoustics are particularly critical when it comes to electric vehicles, given the lack of any ‘engine’ noise.

Apollo Tyres says that the main beneficiaries of the new technology will be models developed for passenger vehicles, electric vehicles and premium motorcycles. Given that electric vehicles deliver their peak torque instantaneously, good tyres are a must. And now with the advent of the Ultraviolette F77, we expect the performance-oriented electric motorcycle segment in India to grow, which puts the onus on giants like Apollo to back up the EVs’ boisterous performance with good tyres.
